    "Buy products: 29%"

As long as MySpace keeps its out-dated design and ever-increasing spam content, I doubt this number will rise. Sure users are bombarded with advertising, but will they distinguish or actually care for a store built into the website?

social buying looks like the next big thing.

The American Marketing Association is correct. MySpace is missing out on millions of profit by not having their own store to buy "stuff".

Ah - it's not about just having a "Store" JaV - but about how you leverage someones social network to help them find new products and see what people they trust are recommending. How many times have you asked someone you trust what to buy and believed that far more than an anonymous review or posting on the net?

MySpace to me is a turd floating in a toilet bowl. It's just plain shitty, and needs to be flushed down the toilet.

I also feel that MySpace could've made Billions, had they incorporated a shopping section within their site. With the amount of traffic they receive on an average day, It's quite obvious that the numbers would sky-rocket during the festive season.
Maybe MySpace is just ignorant of the amount they could have made in this holiday season.
We never know, they might just come up with a brand new shopping section by next thanksgiving.

    All the best Tom ;)

Cool article. I am entuhsed to see the potential for social shopping sites. I agree with this potential. I am co-founder of a SS site (www.dealarmy.com) that hopes to harness the power of the community to help members make better informed purchase decisions. The biggest problem we're having is building critical mass. A catch 22 situation I guess. Need members to build a community but need the community to make the site useful/powerful enough to attract new members. Honestly, I am a little bummed to hear MySpace et al are considering venturing into this realm. With their member base they are like the 800 pound gorilla in the room. They can squash a lot of up and comers if they so choose. Ah well! No one said it would be easy.

Ultimately it's not about what my friend wants to buy, it's about price, deals, saving money. Most people probably already know what they want to purchase, they just can't afford it or they don't want to overpay, which is where sites like www.dealighted.com come in (which shows hot deals on products posted by people) and shopping engines like pricegrabber, wize.com, etc.
