And should we post these questions in the comments / email?
  • ToddC · 1 year ago
To all the designers on the panel, what percentage of the success or in some cases lack of success of your product / service do you think can be attributed to the design.

More specifically if say Ryan Sims (my favorite designer on the panel) had designed some of the 37 seven signals products or even digg would they be more, less, or equally successful.... and WHY?

I'll try, I'd like to ask Daniel Burka of Digg what makes website creators better community players: learning how to better lead online conversations or finding better channels into conversations that already exist among users. Essentially, as users become more important, should we be more proactive or more reactive? Thanks.

I would like to direct a question towards all the speakers: do they see methods of design merging with approaches for efficiently transmitting information (via innovative visualization of data for example) to the web audience ? Also in the same respect, how web design and presentation can evolve in order to help distilling and bringing together (via websites that follow an aggregation model similar to FriendFeed.com) all streams of online social life ?
  • Max Joseph · 1 year ago
Ok, I'll give it a shot. I will direct my question to Patrick Haney: With Web 2.0 and Social Media being the hot topics these days two big business and academia (because they are always two steps behind) everyone wants to get involved and be a player in the space. As someone working in the academic world, how do you as a designer balance interesting, creative and innovative design, the desire to bring the medium to a new level, with the practicality and rigid nature of University bureaucracy?

To Ryan Sims I would ask: How do you see web design evolving alongside the needs of the end user within all facets of online social media? And in which direction do you feel it will it be taken?

To all I would ask: How would the next "Cloud Computing" influence web design and user interaction?

As you all know, web design is a field which skilled designers -- both male and female of all nationalities -- participate in and contribute to through collaborative efforts, and through conferences such as this. About two years ago, Chris Messina of Factoryjoe.com described a Future of Web conference as the "Future of White Boys club". About a year ago, Black Web 2.0 made a succinct observation concerning the 2007 A List Apart Web Design Survey results and the lack of Black web professionals in the design industry. Since this conference is titled the "future" of web design, what are you doing to ensure that both women and minorities are included in this future (and not just on this panel)?

Throughout human history, the task of the designer has been to merge utility and appeal for the benefit of the user. From primitive pottery, to buildings and homes, to flying machines, designers past have built upon each other's successes and failures to create more effective and useful inventions. Now in the age of information, instead of physical objects, many designers create interactions between the human mind and the body of data that we call the internet. Has the fundamental task of the designer changed from times past? Or is the task of designing an effective user interface fundamentally the same as it once was for our more primitive ancestors?

I wonder how much our task as designers has changed and how much we can learn from past design examples. Answers from any of the interface designers would be great: Daniel Burka, Paul Boag, Khoi Vinh. Who is a student of history?

My question would be directed to all panel members, but should probably be answered by those who have the most experience with Web design and academia. My question is:

Where should "Web design" exist in academia - should it be part of an Art school curriculum where the focus is on graphic art and animation, or should it reside with a Computer Science program with a focus on semantic (X)HTML for integration into a CMS?

As a follow up, I may ask "Will it ever be clear-cut, or should we all get used to playing both parts?"

    Thanks for the opportunity,

The future of Web design is one of integrated specialization. Whereas the Web exists now as a major cultural force, something that has changed the human paradigm and demonstrably altered reality, its role will become increasingly smaller and more specialized.
