The original Mosaic Killer? I think it did kill it's rival.

Re: Top 5 Tech “Killers” That Weren’t

Maybe yahoo or microsoft can "kill google" but not Cuil

Re: Top 5 Tech “Killers” That Weren’t

I personally hate it when ANYTHING is labeled as "Product X Killer!", because it really never happens. Multiple products can be perfectly content co-existing in the same market for years. While one product may steal some market share from the other, it's not like the first product that it's competing against is just going to die instantly. Yet the attention-grabbing headlines continue to permeate the top news websites and blogs. I cringe every time I read or hear the words. It's a completely unrealistic view of the way the market works. Thanks for the great post bringing us back down to earth.

Re: Top 5 Tech “Killers” That Weren’t

There's really no "killer" for Digg - Digg is killing itself. It was a great idea when it was new, but, unfortunately, it's overburdened by legions of ideologues who tend to "Digg up" scores of inane stories.

Re: Top 5 Tech “Killers” That Weren’t

You forgot Segway, the pedestrian killer.

Re: Top 5 Tech “Killers” That Weren’t

You know, I use Hulu all the time, and youtube also. It seems like Hulu does have a lot of videos that YouTube no longer does - it is really hard to find actual TV on youtube, because they seem to have found a way to take that stuff down really quickly.

But youtube is great for every other type of video - older tv, movie clips, home videos, music, etc. (Except for any Prince video, where the sound has been taken away! Argghh!!!)

Room for both!

Re: Top 5 Tech “Killers” That Weren’t

Hulu is in a league of its own. While it may not be a youtube killer, I don't think that its intent. Rather they have added ads to their videos and are likely making a decent ROI for shows that are being put up there.

Re: Top 5 Tech “Killers” That Weren’t

I think it may be a teensy little error to conflate the entire technology industry with the handful of websites on which you have from time to time commented!

Re: Top 5 Tech “Killers” That Weren’t

Wasn't Mashable supposed to be a TechCrunch killer.
