How does a new site that is 1 month old generate 850,000 members, too good to be true.
  • Jennifer Van Grove · 1 year ago
That's a totally legitimate question, that's why I asked Luft and he swears the Facebook application was the key. Maybe it is too good to be true, but the members appear to be real moms actively participating in meaningful conversations related to motherhood.

Hmmm...if the numbers are true, then that's pretty impressive. The site is very bland, though.

I think that this looks good but I did come across a similiar website the other day called Momfaves.com. However Momfaves has a different approach, it complies all the recommendations of mom's everywhere. I found it helpful, it's like the consumer report guide but mom tested. Check it out...momfaves.com.

Well, I just joined and there ARE that many moms in there. They've definitely been flying under the radar. Never heard of them.

I have been a user there from a long time and i just love it, have made plenty of good friends, we share our experiences all the time, it's totally a recommended site to every woman out there.

    Looks like you got snookered:

    - Adonomics indicates their Facebook sign-ups only amount to 37,392 active users

    - Quantcast & Compete differ in their estimates. Quantcast estimates their traffic only at 41.7k for end of October while Compete estimates 140k. Either number is WAY WAY off of 850k!

Really wish there would be more journalistic muscle behind these articles, like uh simple fact-checking!
  • Ephraim Luft · 1 year ago
Bryan, I believe that you read the Adonomics page incorrectly. To clarify, Adonomics says that we have 37,392 daily active users. This number is an estimate by Adonomics and is actually low. We are not sure why Quantcast and Compete are not measuring us accurately, but they are frequently not accurate. If you look at our Facebook application alone, our monthly active user numbers are at around 840,000 unique users. That does not even account for traffic to our site.

Thanks a lot for the constructive feedback on our product and our UI. We appreciate it.
  • Jennifer Van Grove · 1 year ago
Thanks for chiming in Ephraim...was just about to point out the difference between daily active users and sign-ups on Facebook.
  • Jennifer James · 1 year ago
I was about to say that, too, but didn't want to sound like I didn't know what I'm talking about. Quantcast and Compete are always lower than actual numbers and even more so when a site is fairly new.
  • Bryan · 1 year ago
@Ephriam, although Adonomics' estimate is based on average *daily* active users, the enormous discrepancy between this number and your self-asserted *monthly* active user number is multiple orders of magnitude in difference from each other. Your estimate is not yet supported by any third-party validation, and so this huge discrepancy between the daily & monthly active user numbers has yet to be explained. If you could point the community to a third-party source you'd be more convincing.

@Jennifer, the original critique wasn't relating the difference between "daily active users" and *sign-ups* on Facebook. It's the difference between *daily* active users and *monthly* active users on Facebook.

    @Bryan:

Hey, I'm Jesse, the guy who created Adonomics. Since I sold the site the data is no longer reliable -- the people who purchased it don't really maintain it. It makes me sad to say this, but I wouldn't trust it.

That said, Circle of Moms has 839,131 monthly active users. You can see there right here: http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id...

Additionally, Facebook reports through its API that they have had 177,176 weekly active users. Hope that clears things up.

    Cheers,
    Jesse

Interesting article. I am launching a niche social network that is targeting consumers (mostly women 25-55 years old)who are interested in beauty and skin care advice. I have the typical social network features as well as a unique program that gives you product recommendations for your specific skin type and skin concerns. Your recommendations come from a database of people who have a similar skin profile as you.
In order to drive traffic, would you recommend I also develop a Facebook application? What about Facebook Connect?
    I appreciate your help.

Out of interest, what platform does this site run on,
Is is a custom built site or is it customised version of
for example an open source software such as wordpress or joomla.

It is very impressive, love you work.
  • Ephraim Luft · 11 months ago
Zak - Good question. Circle of Moms is a custom built site.
