We capture the exact position of each click, as well as clicks on form fields, buttons and images. This way we can provide a very accurate heatmap of the click stream.
That sounds very cool - I'd love to see where people are abandoning my forms, for example. I've signed up for an invite, and am looking forward to trying it out.
I'm assuming I implement it by adding JavaScript to my pages?
Yes, it's a tiny bit of script.
Whoever programmed that bit of code is a total genius! ;)
In testing, has it shown to slow down the user or is it utterly unnoticeable?
One question: is there a time-based "trail" file generated such that a designer could get, as an example, some kind of aggregate link trail schematic overlaid indicating sequence of clicks?
Industrial designers trained in ergonomics sometimes determine component layouts through "link data" analysis - a kind of schematic showing the links between components which are numbered to show the steps for a particular activity. And, just to complete my thought here, feature-based CAD applications generate "trail" files listing all the steps taken to create a part; often used for training purposes. Something that combined the two could be very useful to help designers create better website layouts. They could do things like determine visitors are jumping back and forth across the page and rearrange the site to group interface elements appropriately (which is probably what this app is intended to help people do).

We are trying to make Crazy Egg track things on a website that analytics doesn't track, so that people can better understand how visitors interact with specific pages on a website.
http://www.atlassolutions.com/enterprise/usabil...
this is done by javascript and has been around for a while.
Of course the ability to do this has been around for awhile. Atlas provides this click density tracking solution for entreprise level clients and other "big" businesses. At Crazy Egg, we are trying to bring this type of tool to everybody, so they too can easily use this information to learn about their visitors and improve their websites. As we add features, we will be providing more and more useful tools for individuals and businesses that companies like Atlas are not serving.
Short answer: "magic" ;)
Long answer: We actually track the relative position of the click to the position of the clicked_thing. You're right, absolute X/Y coordinates would be pretty useless.
So when reporting on it we can figure out where everything has moved and relatively position those clicks relative to that items relative position on the page.
Everything is relative (especially in my family :D )
We've love for you to try out Crazy Egg for yourself, so you can see the difference, and judge for yourself. Just email us at info at crazyegg.com
Of course the 10 clicks a day I get on my site (9 of them me, checking links) isn't a really good test but it was enough to show me what goes on.
There are a couple of things I'd like to see.
1: IP filters. let me add a list of IP addresses to ignore. (In my case, that would eliminate most of my traffic but I could see the real clicks instead of just me poking around the site.)
2: Some way to integrate the heatmap with my other stats tracking package. II personally use awstats. It would be nice to find a way to be able to jump between that and the heatmap so that I could look at 2 different versions of the data.
3: More than just one page. Ok, I hear you this is a 'premium' account feature and I'm just a lowly beta-leach. But it would be nice to be able to put in my URL, have crazyegg grab screen shots of all the pages and then as I get clicks on different pages, let me see the different heatmaps.
4: Find some way to handle dynamic pages like a blog. Ok, the day after I set mine up, I changed themes. It would be nice if crazyegg.com could detect that things have changed, grab a new screenshot and where possible, integrate the old data. (because with my blog, the top and sidebar stay pretty constant, it's just the middle that occasionally changes.)
Anyhow, I hate to disappoint Pete because he expects me to be the naysayer but I gotta say I really love this system. My wife (the lovely and talented Kathy) works at a design shop. I'm recommended to them that as soon as this comes out they get a corporate account and track the properties they create for their clients.
It reminds me of the story of the architect who built a beautiful building with a courtyard in the middle. He had the courtyard landscaped, put in benches to sit on but did not page any walkways. This puzzled the owner of the building. 6 months later, the architect came back to the building with his crew. The courtyard was now crisscrossed with paths that people took to get across it or to the benches or to wherever they were going. The architect had his crew page those paths because it's where the people wanted to go.
Crazyegg.com is an excellent tool for any designer to help them figure out what people are really doing with their designs.
IMHO, YMMV, etc.

I say something is good and it really is good - how about that! It's almost like I give honest appraisals of the services I test! Actually, I don't think I've ever given an extremely positive review and been completely wrong, but some people do criticize me for being too negative about the services I dislike.
Actually, the praise of CrazyEgg is doubly deserved. Not only is Hiten one of the nicest people I've been in touch with, but they're working on new features that will make CrazyEgg the killerest (and yes, that's *definitely* a real word). :)
Pete - Thanks for the kind words and encouragement :-)
It's not about you being right, hell your usually right. What's amazing is that we agree your right. :)
Hiten,
I look forward to seeing the new features in action.

As well as the free trial, which was launched some time ago, there is now a new clickdensity package available. The 'Starter' package costs just £2.50 (less than $5) a month and allows you to record up to 10,000 clicks on an unlimited number of pages. Full details of the package are available here:
http://www.clickdensity.com/News.aspx#item2
Please let us know what you think of this package or if you have any other comments or suggestions. We have a long list of features that we plan to add, but are always looking for more ideas.
You can contact us either using the contact form on the website or by mailing info@clickdensity.com.
Thanks,
Jon.

I also plan on doing a 1 month review as well.
Any thoughts on similarities/differences between these two products?
