Theres a site called design the time thats still being constructed that has a similar idea, its been funded Â£50million in the UK not sure if its been reported on yet, not much information about it though.

Thereâ€™s so many social networks out there these days it can be hard to differentiate one from the next. This one sounds interesting with their â€œtimelineâ€ type of linking of events. Iâ€™m going to check it out to see if itâ€™s any good.

The intent of Nearbie is not for people to record every moment of their lives. It's to get the high points included as part of history so you can discover how your history connects with the history of everything else. And to become part of the history of other people, places, and events.

It's a great idea but what I don't want to do is spend time pouring all my photos, event, contacts into Nerbie. Import my photos with the Flickr API and import my events from upcoming/last.fm/iCal. Pair them up using dates and times.

Nearbie is a fantastic idea but I wan't it to work silently and ingergrate with my existing stuff online.

Dumbfounder, you got it on the nose.

With the simple foundation of History, recorded in a simple Who, What, When, Where format, Nearbie is designed to deliver everything you just mentioned and much more.

Soon you'll see the the "Connections" feature. This feature cross-referrences your history with the history of whatever person, place, or event you are currently viewing. So if you are viewing Jane's page (who you have never met) and you and Jane both have history related to Superbowl XXX, Nearbie will bring that to your attention - without you having to dig for it. The more Nearbie knows of your history and of Jane's history, the better it can connect you - so make history! :)

Our mobile browser interface is also coming soon, so this effect can work for you in near real-time as more and more people use Nearbie while on the go. For instance, with Nearbie's simple "Places within Places" structure, you'll be able to see the faces of every person that has history in the same chair your are sitting in at the stadium. Of course, we're just getting started in terms of content, but the architecture is in place.

As far as applying this effect over multiple degree's of separation (Gettysburg to Burger King), this is also in our sights.

Nearbie was originally conceived (in 2002) as a mobile, GPS-enabled app for detecting history around you. As the market for Internet-connected, GPS-enabled, mobile devices has not materialized as quickly as I hoped, we have implemented Nearbie as a website with many of the same benefits, but less of the technical requirements. You can bet we will be leveraging GPS soon enough.

Our goal is to give everyone a new way to record history - one with many more uses than the way we record history today. We hope you'll come along for the ride.

Interesting concept. Can you link to others that share the same piece of history? So if you went to a particular concert can you then see others that also were at that event? Could be very interesting to mine that data and see people that you regularly share venues with but have never met. Match it with a geolocation device to automatically plot the events and suddenly you can get to know the people around you that you never bother to talk to. Lots of interesting possibilities, hopefully this idea will catch on.

Taking the 2 examples of exploring the people who were near Gettysburg in 1860 and seeing what happened to the people that were at Pizza Hut last month, it would be incredibly cool to navigate the path through time that thinks the two.

I'm especially glad you shined the light on our "new paradigm."

At Nearbie, we think of everything in terms of history. To us, the history of you joining Nearbie 10 minutes ago is fundamentally the same as George Washington crossing the Delaware - it's all connected through people, places, and time. So why not have one place on the web where those two things can connect? That's why we built Nearbie.

As for the time variable, check back soon. Time sliders will soon be available to let you explore history within whatever time range you select.

You'll soon be able to explore people who were near Gettysburg between 1860 and 1865, AND see what happened at the Pizza Hut down the street last month - it's all history.
