I've been working on a site that's best described as "competitive mini-blogging for ideas".

User can submit their own ideas or revise others. Those revisions then compete against the original. Users can even put Adsense next to their ideas to earn from them.

There is a newcomer. Not really launched but surfaced a month or so ago. nonews.com. It's going through a slow redesign. It let's you upload text, video, pic and sound files from your cell or browser. It has a mobile site @ m.nonews.com and it has different channels to which you can upload. A public channel and 3 private channel, one for each generic relationship: family, buddies and business.

This should be titled, "Twitter Rivals Compared", and Pownce should not be on this list. Pownce needs to be compared with IM platforms, as that seems like what it offers. For those championing email or IM, for that matter, should realize Pownce offers 100MB files to be transferred (I think gtalk may offer something similar or larger).

I don't think a founder's popularity can drive user uptake to a significant level without a serious differentiator. The technological implementation is impressive though.

The features of such systems can really be analyzed based on a few concepts (I'm sure I'm missing something(s)):

"Number" -one_to_one, one_to_many)

"Time" -static post to web page, post to specific account or accounts (log), now or never

"Input method"- email, IM, SMS, proprietary method

I just blogged about how Pownce wins on gender.

Just took a quick look at moodmill, would be interesting if they (or the other mood sites mentioned in comments) integrated with Google Maps. Would be awesome to see a map of moods around the world, see the happiest and saddest places etc.

Also, would be good to view overall moods by category of person, such as gender or age.

I would imagine moodmill would be particularly useful to women, you know, what with their monthly mood-swings ;)

I don't much like the Pownce AIR. The twitterific application is so clean and simple and has a perfect accordion (resize) feature. Pownce AIR has this really dated way of refreshing content - going blank and then re-appearing. Twitter's updates are seamless.

Also, there's something to be said for taking a while to build up followers on Twitter. People follow you because they like your posts. On Powce, you can build up a network in ten minutes - or at least that's what happened last weekend when the mashable invites went out. It was nice, but what to do now? Pownce is also not mobile. That's a big drawback for m

One thing about Pownce I like is its website design. It's pleasing on the eye - better than Twitter's, but I'm so bowled over by Twitterific. I'm sure I'll get to like Pownce too, eventually

It depends. Tumblr's one-liner is to document your websurfing; to post media while you're on-the-go. User dynamics, however, upgraded and turned it to an actual blogging service (which is amazing!).

The same thing happened with Twitter, by the way: Twitter's one-liner is "What are you doing now". User dynamics turned it into a chat platform, then came Pownce who took this chatting need and turned it into a full feature in their service.

Lihi gets it right. Tumblr is a different product. And while I think you guys know that, knocking it as feature-poor at the end of your mini-blogging review isn't really accurate or fair.

From the standpoint of actually blogging, it's the most feature rich client of the group. You can share quotes, photos, videos, chats, or full text posts. It's also the easiest blogging platform to set up with your own domain.
Even if you're pointing to your own domain, you can still take advantage of community features (i.e., see what your pals are blogging & reblog their posts).
Like Jaiku, it allows you to import feeds from other blogs and sources (e.g., Flickr, Twitter, Last.fm).
It does lack interaction in the form of comments. And that's a serious problem they say they're working on. Tagging is also a real need.
But it's still a much stronger product than you imply.
