    I hate to say this but if they think one person instead of a small team can do this they are being cheap, even if you outsource the coding. If this is true, they are saying they have little or no vision about where to go... Makes you wonder if they need for an evangelist yet!

    Last year I used to get quite a few LinkedIn connections every month. This year is different. I got my first one in months last week. FB is on the other hand rocketing. It is also because of shifting successes in social networks that the portable social network initiative is *so bloody important* and that could be something for LinkedIn to jump on if they want a way back!

    LinkedIn is fine. Its become the place salesfolk and IT guy keep their resumes updated. Facebook whole different ball o wax, its the weekend side...room for both..keep em separate...

    Linkedin ad sounded something like this:

    We need to complete with the APIS of facebook, google etc. We have no idea about what developers will make out of our API. All we know is 'We need API'


    Creating a community of thinkers, strategist, developers would have been a better thing to do rather than hiring 1 person to do so...

    dc crowley and feelfree82 seem to be under the mistaken impression that LinkedIn wants one person to develop their entire developer network. They are hiring a "Developer Network Manager" . What does a manager do? He/She *manages*.

    LinkedIn is smarter than a lot of people are currently giving them credit for. Compared to Ryze and some other business-focused social networks, they've put together a really well-developed site. I can't blame them for being caught off guard by Facebook suddenly going from a college student network to the next hot business trend with platform potential.

    For business networkers, the fate of LinkedIn vs. Facebook will depend on a few things:
    1) Facebook's giving users the ability to display their profiles to people in different contexts. Professional contacts see one set of information, personal contacts see another.

    2) Facebook making an effort to actually make their service fit business uses. The "how do you know this person" options have been commented on a lot as an example of Facebook not having a clear idea of how professional relationships are distinguished from other kinds.

    3) LinkedIn's ability to not only deploy a developer network, but make that network better for business uses than Facebook's. That means creating special data sets and variables for things like places of employment, references, skills listed, etc.

    4) LinkedIn must deploy better group options. This is one of the few things Ecademy does better than LinkedIn, and they don't even do it that well. The current options for creating LinkedIn groups are almost invisible. The most active user community discussions around LinkedIn are happening on Yahoo! mailing lists. When users have to go to a different service to talk with each other about your service, you're doing something wrong.

    5) LinkedIn must not replace their old plan, they must integrate it with the new plan. I'm sure the old plan had things like getting partnerships with business-service companies, organizing real-world networking groups, and better developing the knowledge-sharing aspects of their site. Hopefully, those ideas have not been placed on the shelf while they focus on developing their online offerings to compete with Facebook. They can't just be catching up, they need to get ahead. And to do that, they will have to work twice as hard. Tough. That's what it takes.

    Linkedin caters for old people. Seriously Linkedin's users are mostly paid customers have at least 15 year or more experience which makes them "not young". That is one of the reason why Linkedin is not changing too much of their features and funtionalities. Can't teach old dogs new tricks. Personally i feel instead of competing with Facebook, Linkedin should only focus on their niche group. THe group that has been contributing financially to the site. Losing them will have pretty bad consequences to the site. Besides, Linkedin is the only social networking site that does not rely solely on advertising.

    @GraemeThickins: But you can upload photos on LinkedIn - and have been able to do so for years. About 80% of my LinkedIn Connections have photos. Admittedly, facebookers are even better in showing what they look like.
    I like both sites. Facebook for getting inside info about other companies that I want to work with etc (I never mind the over-inflated resumes). Facebook is about friends and family, like a never-ending coffee break...
