Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2007/10/05/oreilly-facebook-report/

Tim O'Reilly has a reputation of reporting solid thought provoking commentary and I should think that this report will turn some heads.
With Facebook front lined in the news almost daily O'Reilly has picked a heavily laced with arsenic subject matter monetizing the social network. Yikes!

good post, but you shoulda posted some numbers (from the report):
Only 84 Facebook apps generate 87% of the traffic, and only 45 apps have over 100,000 users! (let's see, if there are 5,300 apps, and 84 apps get serious traffic, that leaves....5,216 Facebook apps that are 'dogs'?!)

I'm wondering how many of the 5300 apps aren't aimed at the mainstream audience, and are possibly there to serve a very small "niche" of users. How many of the apps are only hoping to capture 5,000 or 10,000 or 50,000 users? It might be something interesting to study.
