We are discussing Marketing 2.0 over at our blog as well. Since our blog is on marketing, we have actually started a series on Marketing 2.0!
Crap, sorry - I don't know how I managed to forget about that. Serves me right for writing this stuff at 5am, I guess. Didn't want to tread on your toes - I'll change it to Branding 2.0 to avoid any confusion.
"how smart individuals are building global brands with zero marketing dollars, simply by leveraging existing social networks like MySpace, YouTube and the blogosphere itself"
Hmm, that meme sounds awfully familiar, wonder where I've heard that before?
Glad to see you running with it.
You wrote an article like this before? If so, feel free to link to it. I certainly had no intention of ripping off anyone else's ideas.
Good point. I'll take that bit out of the post so I can build a "stealth" brand. :)
I make no claim to being either the first or only to have said this: http://publishing2.com/2006/04/23/what-if-media...
I guess great minds think alike :)
More important though, your example is a great one -- the implications for the economics of 2.0 are HUGE.
Marketing 2.0 / Branding 2.0, whatever you want to call it, I am just happy that there is more discussions about this, as it is a very powerful effect that is going on right now!
It's easy to make a profile on something like MySpace, but then how do you get people to actually come to your page and see what you have?
I love these stories of people hooking into these high energy web movements like MySpace and YouTube. What I would like to see more of are pieces describing what they actually did to create the initial spark that got everyone's attention. Your blog definitely covers this topic, but I'm still hungry for more.
Also, has video already trumped soundly the Podcast movement? I even read a piece the other day that asked if the Podcast movement would ever have the explosive growth it was supposed to have:

If you post relevant content to your myspace blog, and add niche-related friends to your friends list…make sure you also visit your new friend’s blog, and click ‘Invite to My Blog’ underneath their pic.
If they subscribe, then myspace will notify them on their home page whenever you make a blog post.
All I know is that my blog posts to my subscribers pull in more traffic than corny old bulletins.
Thanks
