Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2006/04/28/marketing-20-ask-a-ninja/

Pete, nice to see someone else talking about Marketing 2.0!
We are discussing Marketing 2.0 over at our blog as well. Since our blog is on marketing, we have actually started a series on Marketing 2.0!
  • Marketing with MySpace · 2 years ago
Very nice and informative blog Neil! I also discuss active marketing 2.0 techniques for marketing with social networking websites, mainly MySpace, for developing "brand equity."

    Neil,

Crap, sorry - I don't know how I managed to forget about that. Serves me right for writing this stuff at 5am, I guess. Didn't want to tread on your toes - I'll change it to Branding 2.0 to avoid any confusion.

    Pete,

"how smart individuals are building global brands with zero marketing dollars, simply by leveraging existing social networks like MySpace, YouTube and the blogosphere itself"

Hmm, that meme sounds awfully familiar, wonder where I've heard that before?

Glad to see you running with it.

    Scott,

You wrote an article like this before? If so, feel free to link to it. I certainly had no intention of ripping off anyone else's ideas.
  • Pete Cashmore · 3 years ago
    BillyG,

Good point. I'll take that bit out of the post so I can build a "stealth" brand. :)

    Pete,

I make no claim to being either the first or only to have said this: http://publishing2.com/2006/04/23/what-if-media...

I guess great minds think alike :)

More important though, your example is a great one -- the implications for the economics of 2.0 are HUGE.

Pete, I just found your blog and a couple of things jump out at me. First, the site looks great. Simple and clean without looking Guugly (That's "Google ugly"). Second, you do a wonderful job of pulling together all these concepts and making sense of them. Things are changing so quickly that I think we all sometimes get overwhelmed with the possibilities. I'm a little less overwhelmed for having found your blog, so thanks.

    Pete,
Marketing 2.0 / Branding 2.0, whatever you want to call it, I am just happy that there is more discussions about this, as it is a very powerful effect that is going on right now!

    Pete,

It's easy to make a profile on something like MySpace, but then how do you get people to actually come to your page and see what you have?

I love these stories of people hooking into these high energy web movements like MySpace and YouTube. What I would like to see more of are pieces describing what they actually did to create the initial spark that got everyone's attention. Your blog definitely covers this topic, but I'm still hungry for more.

Also, has video already trumped soundly the Podcast movement? I even read a piece the other day that asked if the Podcast movement would ever have the explosive growth it was supposed to have:

I think leveraging social networks is a great idea though I wonder which markets it will/won't work for. There are many people who don't use these social networks and if you target market are those individuals you'll never reach them via these medias. Of course the upside is that it's all free so even if it didn't work you really haven't lost anything but time.

Thanks the the heads up on ask a ninja! I watched a few and they were pretty hysterical.

Excellent example - we try to get our small business customers to embrace web 2.0 marketing - which is a little terrifying for a lot of them. Always good to have some examples of success up the sleeves :)

Me, personally…I use myspace for networking and for its free blogs.

If you post relevant content to your myspace blog, and add niche-related friends to your friends list…make sure you also visit your new friend’s blog, and click ‘Invite to My Blog’ underneath their pic.

If they subscribe, then myspace will notify them on their home page whenever you make a blog post.

All I know is that my blog posts to my subscribers pull in more traffic than corny old bulletins.

This is an excellent article. I have only been involved in Social Networking for a few months, and it takes a lot of hard work. I have been especially involved with Myspace and I am having a great time over there. Thanks for the great article.
