It's probably space aliens. There's probably a highly advanced race that has mastered the art of communicating in 140 byte messages, and Twitter threatens its dominance of the galaxy. Twitter's new hires are actually alien plants sent to sabotage the operation.

Looking over what I just wrote, I think it's the most reasonable explanation that I've ever heard.

I imagined that it was mysterious men in black came in and pulled the plug Ghost Busters style and the sound from the explosion (sounded like a million robins screaming and then nothing) has caused a sonic boom to such an extreme that the servers crashed.

I'd say it's probably Hillary's supporters in West Virginia trying to block out the Edwards endorsement, but we twitterers tend to be more of the arugula eating elite types.

I think the Democrats are the perfect group to blame. Look at the following parallel:

Twitter is universal (Free), and bunch of people use it. Because of this it's tough to scale and is collapsing under its own weight.

    Just like Universal Health Care.

    Class dismissed. :)

Hey, while Twitter is down, get on BeenUp2! www.beenup2.com. It's like Twitter but with photos! A perfect iPhone app.

I'll tell you why... it's because Twitter is not a big truck... Twitter is a series of tubes...

what the world needs now is a "Twitter is down, I blame..." page not unlike http://kottke.org/when-obama-wins/ page.

I think that the ferrets they have running in hamster wheels connected to generators to power their facility decided to go on strike and attempt to change careers and become professional knee biters.

All electronic/computer based errors are 100% "I blame it on Bin Laden" ... works every time ... try it the next time someone runs out of cash register tape or credit card scan doesn't work - Don't give the Democrats enough credit to actually know how to "crash" the system.

Huh? John Edwards was doing the talk show roundup last week talking about Obama being the de facto nominee. He has been talking a lot lately, this isn't a new phenomenon that began tonight.

The only thing more exhausting than the past 1 1/2 years of Presidential campaigning is Mashable's constant petty Democrat bitch slaps ("I'm talking about you, Mr. Gore," and "I blame the Democrats" today alone.)

Your tech coverage is great, but your whiney political inserts are tiring.
