Whilst Twitter posts covered the quake as it was happening, that's not particularly useful to anybody who isn't following somebody in the affected area. The keywords quake and earthquake would have received a sudden increase in usage, and perhaps Twitter should have a page showing this.

Actually, just saw this on SignOnSanDiego:

The epicenter of the quake was in the foothills east of San Jose â€“ not far from the home of San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed. Reed's home wasn't damaged â€“ but he did alert staff members by text message only seconds after the rumblings began, said Reed's spokeswoman, Michelle McGurk.

I was on IM with a Californian at the time. I like the way he, and probably most people online, took the time to say "EARTHQUAKE, BYE" before ducking for cover. We need to make the names of our disasters much shorter, imho. ;)
