Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2007/05/03/myspace-no-gays-for-a-day/

  • Ali · 2 years ago
well at least they didn't add bestiality and take out "not sure".

what does "not sure" mean anyway? I'm weighing my options? weird...
  • marc · 2 years ago
Lol ALI, not sure means that the person isnt sure if he's straight, bi , gay , or lesbian, because some go through fases in life where they discover themselves. I never was attracted to anything else then women, as they are so damn beautifully made lol ( well at least for the good looking ones lol ). Anyways, it's funny how mashable JUMPS on the occasion and creates a graphic for the news header right away lol, nice graphic BTW :) I wonder who is their fotoshop background guy, would be cool to know where he learnt to do that candy coated effect on the graphic.
  • Ali · 2 years ago
I can make candy coated effects too. Just haven't done any with rainbows. I'm pretty "sure" of my orientation ;)
  • Ty Graham · 2 years ago
Hey I really like the candy coated affect too, I'm probably the smartest gay on the planet. If anyone here wants to help me design my site blipd.com, contact me and I'll give you full credits when we launch. It has nothing to do with my orientation lol, but it is THE NEXT MYSPACE/YOUTUBE type of site of site in influence/size.
  • Chris · 2 years ago
Umm... "Candy Effect" = Pen Tool + Low Opacity White Fill
  • marc · 2 years ago
oh and on another note: if they say that it's a technical issue, then that's supposed to mean that they had a server cluster dedicated for the gay button. rofl-copter
  • marc · 2 years ago
sorry for disturbing the peace again: on this article, check out the google adsense titles haha: gay lounge personals, gay gay, canada's gay personals, meet sexy singles.... ow my god, must watch some girl porn to erase images from head.
  • eegore · 2 years ago
sorry but your comment is retarded. There is no reference to gay porn in those adsense titles whatsoever. so go on and watch some girl porn cause thats the only action you will get.
  • Rex · 2 years ago
Yeah, the head programmer at MySpace - out to lunch. Did MySpace learn anything from the Digg revolution? Stupid move, and the whole tech area at MySpace is something left to be desired, as in - they need to clean house there.

    @Ali

I agree with you completely, what is the whole "Not Sure" thing?

From my experience it is a whole pop-culture/Emo thing. Kids these days . . . They have to be depressed, confused and worthless to be cool. My old roommate was always going back and forth, but she was a girl, about 22, and not that attractive. I guess beggers can't be choosers!
  • jason · 2 years ago
as a web developer, i fail to see how this could be a bug, with all the other options intact, it doesnt make much sense. of course it doesnt make sense that they would do this on purpose either.
  • keith · 2 years ago
    seriously...

that makes it sould like they don't use referential in their database...

they really are bad developers there.

Rupert Murdoch's political views creeping in? I would think not, but....
  • Daniel · 2 years ago
What about the term "queer"? It denotes a certain portion of the homosexual population that believes in a non-hierarchical separation of gay, lesbian, transgendered, etc. It's a bit academic, but people really believe in breaking the heteronormative.

If anything, it'd be an interesting MySpace experiment.

Read more about queer theory here.
  • Josh93945 · 2 years ago
HA! I thought it would be funny to set my profile to "Lesbian" even though I'm a straight guy, and LO AND BEHOLD! My home profile said "Orientation: Gay". This is just a bug people! On the actual profile page, it's filtering based on sex, just not on the edit profile page. THIS IS A NONSTORY.
  • Paul Butler · 2 years ago
Good catch. It explains how such a bug should occur -- after all, for it to even let a male choose lesbian would be a bug. No conspiracy here, just a coding issue.
  • Blonde 2.0 · 2 years ago
This may be a bug though it seems odd considering all the other options are still there....Whether a bug or not, the guys over at myspace should have learned something from the latest digg riot and get their act together...
  • thewebguy · 2 years ago
HAH! today myspace is a closet gay!: myspaceisgay.com

  • marc · 2 years ago
pardon me to be in a good mood mister, and i hope your day goes well too
  • Stan · 2 years ago
What pisses me of is that gay people use the rainbow symbol as their gay pride sign nowadays and normal people can't even use it for other purposes with the dager of being misunderstood.

First they took a good word, then a sign of diversity and inclusiveness, hope and of yearning and turned it into gay pride sign... what's next?
  • Gee · 2 years ago
Fuck myspace. They let people show dick, but they deleted my cartoon as a profile picture

I have lots of gay friends and that seems unfair.
  • Antik · 2 years ago
I see this technical problem is a hot potato for some guys :) Don't worry, be happy !
  • Jason · 2 years ago
It is not suprise to me. If you have a myspace page, you are just a advertising statistic to Newscorp. So why not allow them to determine your sexual preference?
  • Bucho · 2 years ago
you people are making mountains out of molehills, seriously. a technical glitch, that's all. it's not some insidious plan by the head honcho of right-winged retardedness, Murdoch himself, who if anyone had paid attention during the buyout of myspace, doesn't control most of the content on myspace thanks to legal and contractual obligations.

relax. they've still got bi and lesbian, which should prove to any normal, rational person that things are not as anti-gay as people are making them out to be.

    you're all ridiculous.
  • dagmar · 2 years ago
hah, they should jsut have "Fag" instead of "Gay."

    fucking fags.
  • fagmar · 2 years ago
grow up dagmar you nigger breeder.
  • dagmar · 2 years ago
Oh? are you racist fag?? haha.
  • John Smith · 2 years ago
    Now it's ok again, right?
  • Mr. Guy · 2 years ago
I just checked... this is not true. Myspace allows gay/lesbian as an option.
  • sean percival · 2 years ago
This was fixed within the last few hours. For some reason it took them more than a day to update the HTML text for that option.
  • Pete Cashmore · 2 years ago
Actually, it was fixed within the last 20 minutes. I had the page open at the time.
  • Andrew · 2 years ago
you people are stupid as hell just becausethere was a glich in the sight dosent mean that myspace is homophobic
  • Not Sure · 2 years ago
actually... its a "gay/lesbian" option. why rain on their parade though?
  • Peter Cashmore · 2 years ago
actually...if you'd read the damned comment thread you would have seen that the bug was hastily fixed just now (they replaced "lesbian" with "gay/lesbian). If you look at the shot in the post, you can see what it looked like a few hours ago, as well as Tom's admission of the error.
  • Motorcycle Guy · 2 years ago
"We’re just glad it wasn’t the “straight” option that got pulled: then we’d have homophobic pundits declaring that MySpace is turning our kids gay through the subtle use of preference pages." haha so true. They're lucky whatever technical issue it was happened to affect the gay value and not the straight value. It seems kind of odd to me that a value in the middle (shouldn't it be in the middle of whatever selector box there is?) was somehow omited. Maybe they messed it up in internationalizing myspace for china though.
  • Omasta · 2 years ago
LOL who cares, myspace is protecting both heterosexual and homo users. by removing the admission of being gay or lesbian they actually remove the likely hood of homo-bashing abuse.
my advice is that gay/lesbian users should seriously GROW the FUCK UP, theres what? 200million users world wide? yeah i can see News Corp deliberately targeting those 10,000 Gay people in Iowa...i mean seriously the world doesnt revolve around you, wake up. Not to mention the term Gay/Lesbian is offensive to 1/2 the worlds population.. Hindu, Muslim... i mean seriously, can you be any more deluded about your importance
  • Jesus · 2 years ago
It was my doing, and you're going to start seeing a lot more of this happening too!

Mr. Murdock should be concerned with his plunging advertising revenue. Which will surely shrivel at even a more rapid rate if the homosexuals decide to "BOYCOTT" his periodicals and "MANHANDLE" his sponsors.
