Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2009/01/25/notetaking-alternatives/

Did you intentionally leave Evernote off the list?
  • Evan · 10 months ago
I was surprised by the Evernote omission too, especially since it is one of the services offering a Google Notebook importer.
  • Daly de Gagne · 10 months ago
Evernote was actually mentioned in first paragraph of the story, & its Google Notes import feature was referenced.

The alternative conspicuous by its absence was Microsoft's Thumbtack. I've been using it for some of my web clipping, as well as basic note-taking. I quite like it.

In terms of good web-based word processing, Zoho is far better than Google documents. If people haven't tried Zoho, they should give it a trial run.

    Sames goes for Thumbtack.

    +1 for Evernote as well.
  • Shawn K · 10 months ago
Wow, I completely spaced out the 1st paragraph mention.
  • Jamie Martin · 10 months ago
Yeah it was down to Evernote and Ubernote for me, I'm sticking with Evernote for now.
  • Evan · 10 months ago
Uh, yeah. My bad too. =D

I think that rumors about Notebook's death are over-exaggerated. You can still copy/paste into the notebook itself rather than clicking Clip button. This would work for users who already have accounts.
  • Ginny Brady · 10 months ago
I thought Evernote should be included, also. It's a notebok on steroids.

Strike up one more vote for Evernote

I just started Using Google Notebook with evernote and I’m really enjoying both. Now I’m able to export from Google notebook to evernote. I can always be sync. When I am taking notes or have an idea, I’ll take a look at each alternatives and see what they bring to the table.

As the developer of Luminotes (mentioned above), I just wanted to personally welcome any Google Notebook refugees who are looking for some new online note taking software. I actually wrote up a whole blog post on the subject a while ago.. Luminotes versus Google Notebook: http://luminotes.com/blog/luminotes-versus-goog...

Nice List of Alternates, But you missed the Evernote, Now it has the Import Feature too.

    Read the first paragraph

Evernote was not in the body of the list, but was mentioned in the introduction with a link to our story about their importing ability. Since I had it mentioned there I felt it was overkill to also put it in the actual body. Not an omission, I promise :)

You have not given place to Evernote in your list ,Evernote is top in my list it's very useful note taking service provided by Evernote.
  • Tessa · 3 months ago
Re-read the first paragraph. Guess it's true what I learned in college, you usually forget the beginning of a story, article, etc. you read.

i used Evernote a lot and Google notebook as well. not sure about the rest.. and never tried them either
  • maique · 10 months ago
i'm not even a user, but it seems that leaving evernote out of the list is a gross mistake. i've heard they even set things up to welcome the refugees, with easy import.
  • Tessa · 3 months ago
Again, re-read the beginning of the post

I'm kind of sad that you skipped out on Backpack completely. It's an amazing site, and the free version is plenty for some small businesses.
  • Kyle Maxwell · 10 months ago
Here's another happy Backpack user wondering why his platform didn't rate a mention, despite its popularity and extensibility.
  • midlifemom · 10 months ago
since i only used google notebook for web clipping, I have been trying webnotes. Although it is in beta, seems to offer quite a lot.
I use Evernote for everything else.

Hehe, I actually missed the first paragraph when I scanned this the first time too, and had the same "Where's Evernote?" reaction.

I had pretty much already decided to switch from Notebook to Evernote before the Google announcement that they were stopping development. I'd tried out Evernote and liked it. The iPhone app is great.

I've tried Backpack as well, and I do think that one is a real omission. I don't use it much for notetaking, but I do still set reminders there occasionally. It's a great service. I think the iPhone app is what swayed me to Evernote, if Backpack had something as slick I would possibly reconsider.

I have been using Journler for awhile now, since I realized that Google Notebook wouldn't work with my pen tablet. Journler lets you print to PDF, save as a PDF, set up GTD folders, has a calendar, all sorts of handy tools. Oh, and it has a video and audio notes option as well. No ability to post to your blog via Journler unfortunately, but I do still think it's an excellent program and well thought out. A license is 34.95 and is currently only available for Macs (both Tiger and Leopard)

flynote is a light minimalist alternative
  • balrogjr · 10 months ago
Evernote stores all notes on their server - that's like giving away one's brain, which incidentally includes confidential and non-disclosable info to some stranger - way too scary.

I am amazed that DIIGO (www.diigo.com) is not on this list. I am a HUGE fan of Diigo and use it (literally) everyday. I can not imagine my online life without it.

I am surprised as wekll taht Evernote is not mentioned in the list. But I appreciate that a rather long list of tools is proposed. I suppose that Ubernote and Zoho Note books are the most powerful in the list.
During the last years I am collecting info about different Web research (online research, Web clipping, note taking etc) tools and testing them. I have used about 10 differeent tools and I recommend them to my students.
You can find info in my blog http://zigmasb.wordpress.com

hopefully next time google will error towards the side of caution next time they are starting a service they might not intend to stick with
  • Dare · 10 months ago
Are they REALLY an alternative to Google Notebook? Google Notebook's function was to take notes from websites. Half of these ones don't share this function.

First Goggle Notebook is not going away, at least not yet. They have only stopped further development.

Second Evernote is not available for Linux which removes it from competition for me.

Best software I have found for clipping web pages, and for researching online is icyte (www.icyte.com). The product is free, has a simple and intuitive user interface, but a back-end with serious grunt. You can save text, tag it, add notes, and it is all easily searchable later on. I couldn't live without it!
