blip.tv may not be as user friendly as youtube, but their target audience is definitely not the same. they allow creators waaaaaaay more control over their content, and they don't ruin the video quality of the media users upload to their site. youtube currently reduces video quality to about 2-300 kbps and reduces res to something smaller than what it's displayed at (which is insane!). on blip, you can upload content and not worry about it looking all pixelated and blurry once it's online. plus, they allow different resolutions, so you don't have to sacrifice anything really. it's going to be a big hit for driven producers, especially perfectionists.

I can see from your writing here that you just discovered Blip and are perceiving it as a me-too, but in fact Blip precedes YouTube, and is a massive favorite in the videoblogging community.

In other words, success for blip is not serving a million videos a day. Success for blip is when independent content creators choose blip because it gives them control over their content, and helps them monetize.

They're the only game in this market, and that's probably what their investors see in them.

I think you've misunderstood blip's market.

They're not targeting Youtube. For example, there is NO copyrighted content on blip. They are not going for "viral video".

What they are building is a platform for independent content makers that want to build their own brand. They support these creators with lots of relevant tools. Their license is the best in the business.

The point is, they are very focused on a market that will probably support a serious businessmodel, and they are not competing with Youtube and the dozens of other video sites.

For independent content creators, right now, they are by far the best choice. That's their focus. That's their market, and thank god someone's doing it.
