Social media has broken down barriers, to a point where you can message someone you aren’t friends with and don’t have contact information for, without any hassles. Before you message a target employee, realize that they receive messages from people asking for jobs all the time and that they might not want to be bothered on Facebook, where their true friends are. As long as you’ve done your homework on the company and them, tailor a message that states who you are and your interest, without asking for a job at first. Get to know them and then by the 3rd or 4th messages, ask if there is an available opportunity.

Hmm. I'm interested in a JavaScript programming/widget creating related job (in Europe?) as a teleworker from Hungary. The site is offering just US jobs, and (as other sites as well) missing the information if it's possibe to work from remote or not. I know that there are not so much startup in Europe as in the US, but that's why it would be interesting.

Dave - Those are great thoughts. We are currently evaluating better ways to source the data and content, and the the Crunchbase API came out while we were in mid-development. Now that it's out and there are some wonderful apps built on top of the Crunchbase API, we are strongly considering it. Thanks!

my advice:

use crunchbase API to pull in startup data
fix rss feed to display company name, not conotes (for all)
allow user feedback/ratings on companies (or via cb api)

It is indeed a great idea, and I headed right over to sign up - sadly, I think they have a ways to go in adding functionality to make it worth anyone's while.
- Their geographic listings are very limited (no Colorado?!)
- Why is Adobe listed as a startup company? PDF and PhotoShop are great, but last I checked they've been around a while.
- Profile, as noted, is very limited and I didn't see a way to upload my resume so right now it's a one-way website.
