This is an absolutely phenomenal move. My personal opinion is that this is indicative of a much larger trend. Many major destinations, be they social networks, blogs, or start pages, are starting to move towards a new information architecture - the aggregator.

Argh, why have a closed development platform? That will stifle competition from widget makers.
I hope they reconsider.
Social websites are in a great position to compete with start pages like Yahoo! and NetVibes. IMO, a social website start page would be ideal...the center of my online digital life w/ the widget tools I use (RSS readers, shoppng, etc), plus the ability to find (and be found by) other people with shared interests.
Protopage V3 added some social aspects, but the key missing functionality among the current start pages is the ability to search among the community to find people who share my interests.
I think the combination of a social website and a widgetized start page would be powerful.

I asked a *long* time ago to get Slideroll on there - alas, no response. It's hard to make headway when the tables are tilted like this. I hope they'll open up their system some more.
That said, I understand their hesitation. It's better to protect themselves from possible malicious widgets by taking it slow.

far out yeah same hea they wont let us on aswell but we still end up finding ways of getting on. They've blocked nearly all of our ways of getting on bebo but they just keep rolling in with ideas.
