I dont mind the fact that Google knows pretty much everything I do online (and possibly off-line) and they dont really make it a secret they are collecting data to sell ads around my click-stream

You're forgetting that AdSense is displayed on a lot of sites. All Google needs is to connect the AdSense-cookie to the other Google-cookies, and they know what sites you browse.

It seems that I recall hearing comments like this about Microsoft not too long ago. If you're worried about it, switch to other platforms. There are other tools available for pretty much all of these functions.

In terms of what they know, it may already be too late. They already know too much. Machine is already very big.

Dilemma.
It is just so much more convenient and useful to use google products than to use the products of other companies. Better. Faster. More reliable. Single sign on. But, they are starting to own me.

So what's missing? A key part is presence.

- Am I online? This could come from GTalk, if it wasn't so poor.

- Where am I? Loki.com does a surprisingly good job of locating me. My home location in Google Maps is another hint.

- What's my latest thought? What am I doing right now? Twitter's for sale. Will Google buy it?

- Who are my friends and followers? This is a big missing piece. Orkut-Google ID integration provides one source, but who uses Orkut any more?

And that really points up a whole area that Google ignores which is particularly important given the focus of this blog. Where's the community? I want to not just publish all the stuff above for my friends to read, but also to aggregate where all my friends are at. This comes down to two key games that people play on the net.
- "Hey, look at this!"
- "What are my friends doing?"
Does Google do anything to support these two? Or is it all a one way flow of information to Google to help them make more money?

1. You can use Vimeo instead of YouTube - it uploads faster than YouTube anyway.

2. Use Flickr for your pictures

3. Get a swissmail.org secure email account for your sensitive email.

4. Use SlideShare for your powerpoint presentations

5. Blog somewhere else other than Blogger.com :)
