Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2007/12/03/facebook-15-billion/

Currently, it is not worth 15 billion, no. But, most of the investments made into this company are for future growth. Facebook seems like the smartest company out (yes including Google and Apple). They continue to innovate and set the standards. When was the last time a company had so much control over the competition. No only that, let's face it, they make good decisions and come out with great features. People complained about how they opened up to the world, and look where they are now. What has myspace done recently...add a friend feed?

wow - this is new - an ANTI-Facebook article! Wow.

Could this be a clever ploy in response to my comment earlier about how Facebook and Mashable are suckling at the same ad company's teet?

Hmmmmm... Or is it just a part of the hivemind sheeple group think of the social media and today is anti-Facebook day, (as it has been on digg, reddit, and pretty much every other site).

Nahh, Chad. We've been anti-Facebook since before it was cool: http://mashable.com/2007/11/08/facebook-bacn-an...

Wait, are there people out there who think that Facebook is actually worth $15 billion?
  • Lonelyceo · 2 years ago
And exactly what percent of those MySpace users use their real names? And what percent say they are 99 years old and live in Timbuktu? Quality means a lot more than quality, when it comes to ads.

15 Billion is what it is not worth or ever will be. Any who pay attention all know where this is heading, Facebook will go out like a has been 80 child star. Grant it I am no expert, but it is not hard to follow trends, and this reminds me of tie dye shirts in the new era. We all need a way to connect, maybe the answer isn't a social network, maybe we don't know the answer yet, but one thing is for sure, Vampire applications, and other totally useless apps on Facebook is proof of the dummying down of our civilization. The software of Facebook is only the first of it's kind, can we do no better than this. No offense Mark Zuckerberg, but my grandkids might read a book about you in the future, on how you started, owned and then dropped to your knees to the next. Mark, I will give you Kudos for being the man of the hour, but it is only the hour.

I'm surprised that a 'skeptic' such as Drama 2.0 would ever write a post in list format. Seems rather web 2.0 cliched to me... Then again, he/she will probably just point out the irony and discount the criticism...

    Cheers,
    Aidan

I'm with the above (anonymous) poster in expressing my shock that people actually believe Facebook is worth $15 billion. Just because ($ from MS / % MS Bought) = $15 billion doesn't mean the company is actually worth $15 billion. I'm sure an independent valuation advisor would come up with a much smaller number, given their earnings and the risks associated with the business.

@"9. The longevity of social networking as a standalone market is questionable."

Oh come on! Who said it is standalone? Social networks are a way to aggregate privacy data for advertising and maybe other purposes. I know it's old fashion to say so, but haven't you thought of FBI or any other interested organization using social networks as a wonderful source of PII (personally identified information).
On the user perspective, social networks do lack some "true value", but who needs it? The penetration rate is way too low to speak of any real competition, media space is 2-3 years behind IT, and IT is at least a 100 years behind the society. People are thirsty for social media by all means, and they will give out their PII as long as it's requered to be there.

I'd like to know what it is Facebook is doing with all this money... there are some fairly stupid and easily fixed issues with Facebook functionality that , a year on, still haven't been touched.

Facebook sucks and is creepy. It is a novel idea and I use the damn thing but I am waiting eagerly for something else. Given how inflexible and cumbersome the site is it won't take much to unseat it. Some basic things like more controls should be there. The author failed to mention how long it took for FB to open APIs took. I think Zucker needs to step out and let management step-in.

I am afraid that this doesn't have much credibility since, as supporting evidence, it quotes a 2007 figure of Facebook users and the number of users has about tripled since then.
