Or to supercharge this, throw the feed into ZapTXT and we'll IM or Skype you when there's a match. If we see that you are offline, we'll even bounce it to your email or phone.

Sameer, could you say more about the ZapTXT and how it works? I guess I'm still so 2007 and haven't caught up with the rest of you. Would love to learn. Thanks.

Is it just me that's found Google Alerts to be totally useless for finding mentions of your own name or nickname online?

Ever since I set the thing up, Google Alerts has systematically notified me of everything I've ever written about myself online, e.g. myspace, facebook profiles as well as profiles for a whole range of sites. It also informs me every time I write a post to my own blog(s).

I know you can modify it to stop doing this but the one time someone else actually wrote about me and included ALL my Google Alert terms within their article I've yet to have Google Alert actually alert me to. I can appreciate Google Alerts may not have their 'spider on the pulse' but it's been two months already and still no alert.

Go figure? Google searching terms and phrases is still far more effective than Google Alerts.

    Hey Adam,

This was already possible with feedmysearch. I've been using for a long time, although I'm not an ego searcher. :-)

Goog alerts work beautifully with Gmail labels and filters set up properly..
