The terms of Ning are unfair.

They state "Users grant a nonexclusive license to reproduce, create derivative works of, distribute, publicly perform, and publicly display such Content on the condition that the Content is attributed in a manner specified by its author, if at all (a â€œPublic Content Licenseâ€).

This license gives you the rights over any content we submit. You only need to ask for a non-exclusive electronic right to archive, promote, newsletter, publicly perform and publicly display such Content for the purposes of making it available to the general public.

I have a problem with terms that state you can create derivative works from the content that I submit.

That is unfair to Bloggers! You actually own any content that is posted on the social networking site. Once we post any content it belongs to Ning and they can do what they want with it, throughout the world, without paying us.

If you recall Myspace change their terms and conditions after songwriter Billy Bragg withdrew his songs from the website in protest.

We are equity investors who will make a buck on OPSWARE. My question is can he do it again? A triple entrepreneur is not so bad.

Please advise how you plan to escape the business and when. Doubt we can handle a private placement, so my only avenue is a IPO which are not so popular in todays market. Please add my name to your records so I can track your progress.

Nobody serious about building a Web 2.0 service that is going to be popular is going to use this. Only amateurs and people without the resources to build it on their own are going to use Ning. It would be very difficult to build anything of real commercial value using Ning given that you don't own anything.

Vaibhav you seem to think that just because Ning has decent tools, you shouldn't compete. All Web 2.0 apps are commodities now. That doesn't mean you can't be successful. It's about having a viable business model and marketing plan. Most Web 2.0 businesses are going to fail, but the opportunity for success will always exist for those with solid business plans, a good marketing and growth strategy and connections in their industry. It's rarely ever just about the technology, and as MySpace has demonstrated, you can have crappy technology but still lead the market if you have savvy management.

The idea looks promising... but, honestly, unless you can download the source code, install it on your own server and customize it to really create your own social network... what's the point?

Yea I also tried this but didnt get the point. ITs sort of open source, but there are a ton of open source apps that mimic the big players. This probably comes in more handy as far as a free hosting platform for these things or nings....

Good to see Ning do something to move them back in to the spotlight. This is a very cool concept for the tinkerer of web pages as well as for people who are more involved as programmers but realize that there's no reason to write a bunch of original code.

Their tech support is unparalled too. Nice work Ning!
