Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2007/07/02/5-new-online-advertising-tactics-we-fear/

Great reporting and analysis. This process connects to the larger monetization of all social life. In a sense, that's not at all new. Anywhere there's people, economic life takes place. But the way digital technology peers into all corners of life pushes the boundaries on the discrete ways we can periodically elude all that. It reinforces our identity as total consumers. Which is scary.

Advertisers have to pay for all the free services society enjoys.

We owe them the respect of allowing them to present their products to us, so we can continue to enjoy the freebies that they indirectly help sponsor

Interesting that a few posts away, we learned that Mashable now carries FMP ads. Any good reasons to believe that FMP won't engage in "tactics we fear"?

I think you can be pretty sure that if any blog advertiser crosses the line, there will be a blogstorm about it. ;)

If you use Safari, get PithHelment. You need never see an advert again, unless you mess up the rules database. All URL requests that match rules identifying known sources of advertising are intercepted locally and never even leave your computer. I've been using it for over a year now and can't recommend it highly enough.

This has two other beneficial side-effects. First, you'll be able to browse much faster (I've already managed to block a source of 6Mb Flash adverts that made using a well-known news site almost impossible until I added it to my rules). Second, you'll be at much lower risk from drive-by virus attacks.

If enough people use effective ad blockers, Madison Avenue will eventually cotton on to the fact that they are wasting their money and turn elsewhere.

Woooooof! The report rocks and definitely scares the hell out of me. I dont want the billboards talking to me about my single hood or anything at all. So is there a possible solution how the things can com into your(user) control? May be you would be changed for your Ads free world.

    Just think about it!!
