I wouldn't using the wisdom generated by communities, crowds, etc isn't scientific.

In fact, there is extensive writing on how particular communities' wisdom can be much more useful than that of individual experts, generic majorities, etc.

A quick search on "wisdom of crowds" brings up a bunch of relevant URLs.

Is that sentence supposed to mean something?

I think most of the established Q&A sites like ours, Answerbag or Yahoo Answers could probably do something interesting along these lines.

The problem (as I see it) with the concept of a "barter" where you have to input information to get it...is that people want to know something now, not be forced through a process to get it. They already Google'd you once, if you keep dangling a carrot & leading them further along before "giving it to them" they'll hit the back button & try out your competitor, who's right there next to your in the search results.

Of course, not every site is discovered through search engines ;) I read about Avanoo here.

Will be interested to see how this one develops or how it competes with sodahead as well, which recently launched similar polling / wisdom of crowds features in a public beta.

Jeremy, you are right on spot - people really want to know answers, not to go through lengthy discussions.

The best way to provided instant services is via SMS, where you have human experts who analyze incoming question and send back an answer. That's why my company does in Ukraine, likewise 82ask.com in Great Britain.

Yes, we can't takle most complex questions, but people are not asking them anyway.

You should also checkout Pollection. It allows you to create polls with music, video, and images integrated. Also, for each poll you can see the map of where the votes are coming in and how results change over time.

Yesterday, the Democrats.org blog featured an excerpt from a story we received from Kristine Reger, a life-long Wisconsinite and mother of three who attended President Obama’s Health Care Town Hall in Green Bay. Today, we asked Kristine to write a guest post to share her full story:
Hi everyone. I submitted my health care story to Organizing for America online, and they’ve asked me to write a guest blog about my experience. Here's what I can tell you:
Though I'm a lifelong Democrat, my husband and I raised our three kids in a mostly Republican suburb. For years and years, I kind of rolled over and skirted political conversations with my friends and neighbors. I didn’t want to engage in debate.
Then last fall, after more than 20 years, I finally decided to have the courage of my convictions. Barack Obama inspired me to get involved. I wasn’t happy with the direction of our country and I thought to myself: enough is enough. I spent lots of time researching the issues and learning about then-Senator Obama’s positions. Eventually, I figured out that I could make a real difference in my own network of family and friends by reaching out to people through email and responding to all the emails going around that I knew weren’t true. You know what I learned? My friends are still my friends. People have started coming to me to understand what’s going on; they rely on me to tell them the truth.
