Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2008/08/16/youtube-ads-4/

As a consumer of media, if I miss something like "Saturday Night Live" I now expect to be able to find the good parts quickly on line. The media companies should have seen this trend long ago and created their own sites where I can go see clips.

While copyright is important, we are moving to a society who expects instant access. Where the large media complex was not providing such things, it does not take a PhD to realize that people will pirate things that the masses want.

I hope to see YouTube and other outlets that will have more access to mainstream media. If the media companies do it right they will see more ad dollars, not less.

media is soooo stupid. When I want to know what's worth watching a user will upload the content. There have been small clips of things on YouTube and I found out what it was and then went to see it or purchased. UGC wether copyright or not is FREE advertising and way more effective.

The thing about creating their own sites (I'm assuming you're thinking of sites separate from YouTube) is that it's all scattered. YouTube has kind of become the one-stop shop. That's why it's beneficial for media companies to utilize the place proactively.

When the internet and sharing first came around, the media companies had just completed a decades-long goal of establishing a total distribution monopoly.

At first they would spend any amount of money to try and stop the internet from becoming a real media distribution outlet, but I think they have to realize eventually that its not a zero-sum game and they need to co-operate and deal with the fact that they can't have an total government-backed monopoly on the flow on information & data.

Yeah, the fight was pretty wasteful. It still is, in Viacom's case.

By the way, looking at the header image once more, that could make for some pretty humorous captions. Any suggestions? "Disturbia," "McCain," "Gas Tax," "Moratorium"....

Advertising on Youtube is a massive sleeping dragon. Once Google gets really serious about it, you'll see advertisers lining up and pouring free content on Youtube. Big media, as usual, are a bit behind the curve.

OK... if we're talking about politics, YouTube and big media then this video has to be seen...
