The problem with this is so many choices and each site will support different ones. So the bottom line how will this be different. For example some sites will support OpenID, others Facebook, others Google. So essentially you will need an identity on each. So what is the difference exactly.

What's important here is the trend. We are moving towards a universal single sign on. Plus, three logins for 30 sites is always better than 30 logins for 30 sites.

Wait, we can't do comments with the Google thing? Then what's the point exactly??
  • Dave · 1 year ago
    @Casi:

We've gotten it installed on our Wordpress Blog: http://codekindness.org/blog/2008/12/04/google-... - we've posted some information about how it worked (first, embedded in the sidebar, and second, in a Wordpress Page)

    Cheers,

Hah - same here. I was so honored to be allowed to GFC in after months of waiting, and a few hours later I get a second email saying anyone can join.

We've been developing several Facebook Connect enabled sites and I agree with @Ian above that the value of these types of tools lies in the data and network that comes along with you. It's pretty cool to see what your friends are up to on sites that you normally use and not expect it. For example, today I joined CitySearch (warning: the beta site still needs some work) via Facebook Connect and I was able to see restaurant reviews from a friend of mine that I would never have found on my own. It took me all of two seconds to join and was a pleasant surprise to see some value from my Facebook network vs. the normal dose of silly gifts and quizzes that are thrown at me...

  • Adam Ostrow · 1 year ago

  • Caio · 1 year ago

Great to see someone using VIDEO comments!

Curious why more people don't use them? I mean, if MASHABLE readers aren't using Video comments, does that mean theres no way that the 'average Joe' will use them??

I am about to launch an online health platform that connects people to practitioners, would i be best to use this product from Google/Facebook or develop the community section myself?
  • Ian Hendry · 1 year ago
Google Friends Connect won't provide much of a community, because Google doesn't have a much of a community to provide, but Facebook Connect looks more interesting. That said, most people try and keep work and facebook separate so how willing they'll be to post back details of pages on your site that they liked remains to be seen.

We've just put ip a Google Friend Connect page as a test on our site. Feel welcome to come and comment using the ratings gadget at http://www.wecando.biz/googlefc.php.

I don't see Facebook Connect having a chance against Google. They have been developing Gmail and Google Reader for years. The polish and the resources behind these industry standard social applications are so far beyond Facebook's, there is no catching up.

Not to mention you can copy and paste a GFC widget in a few minutes. Facebook is trying to throw it out there as a developer app. Who has time to code an API application. How many can?

If it were not for the Digg connection Facebook should just go home. Nothing against FB, I love the place. But ya gotta know when you are beat.

hahaah but i hav got to use fb connect. its very easy to use. this google thing never connects... ever

For those that have implemented a Google Friend Connect community on their site we now have a GFC directory available to list your site and network with other GFC implementers! Add your site to http://gfcdirectory.com. I have implemented GFC on a couple of my sites and like the response so far!

    Hey everyone,

We've taken another step with Friend Connect and just created about six cool, colorful and matching Google Friend Connect themes for y'all to follow in your work: http://codekindness.org/blog/2008/12/09/6-googl...

    Cheers and hope it's helpful,

Too many choices = confusion. Like a previous member mentioned, he would have to sign
with dozens of social media sites to stay connected with different friends as some use FB or
myspace but not twitter. I found a solution called retaggr where you can enter all your profiles
on one site. This has got to be better than surfing across the web to find friends on different sites.
