My most memorable twitter moment of the year was when I heard about the student James Karl Buck who tweeted "arrested" and was able to free himself from a prison in Egypt. I had been resisting twitter up until then. I broke down and joined when I realized that twitter might not just be fun, it could save my life.

No mention about the Republicans holding out in Congress when the Democrats left for the break before the conventions, and trying to repeal the ban on offshore drilling? That entire event was enacted over Twitter and Qik with the #dontgo hashtag. You could include it with your election coverage mention, but with that and TwitTheVote both really brought politics closer to a lot of people, including myself.

I would have to say my most memorable Twitter moment of the year was the Mars Phoenix lander finding water on Mars. What a momentous occasion!

I think the #yahoo moments of the blow by blow yahoo layoffs were pretty amazing. Nothing like that has happened at D*** yet but the attrition is just as bad. It was simply amazing to see (listen) to the tweet from both the leaving and the left behind.

Very true. SXSW08 was indeed a big story this past year for the reason you stated...it clearly demonstrated to all "outsiders" how powerful Twitter can be. It also showed that this power can be in a positive or as in this case in a negative manner. Eventually, the whole story was told but only after the Twitter maelstrom subsided.

I think that the SXSW ill-fated interview of Mark Zuckerberg by Sarah Lacy deserves and honorable mention. The Twitter stream derailed the interview. Over time the story has softened (and changed), but during the on-stage interview and over the following days it was an amazing example of the power of Twitter. It was right then I knew that Twitter was a real movement.

Agree that the frozen pea fund was worth for sure but I believe that all started at the end of 2007 and carried over into 2008. Still, I love @SusanReynolds! Glad you brought it up.
