Wow, no love for the Gary V. celebrity hair shaving for charity (http://is.gd/15QM)? Sure, not Twitter-exclusive, but it bled over, and was one of the most memorable that I've got.

What, you didn't include us in this list? We were in your 16 great Twitter Moments story found here: http://mashable.com/2008/10/31/great-twitter-mo...

    ;)

We also created a very cool Twitter Google Map Mashup to track robocalls during the election here: http://robocall.twibune.com/

Speaking of #10, I think it's amazing that I learned of both Tim Russert's death, and Vancouver Canucks' defenseman Luc Bourdon's death via Twitter.

I now follow half of my local (Rochester, NY) news channels on Twitter. Is this how we'll all get news from now on? Think about it - especially when you read about all the daily papers being in dire straits.

    Ahhh the memories :)

I would have maybe included the Frozen Pea Fund - where the community was mobilized for a great cause.

    Great post!!!

Agree that the frozen pea fund was worth for sure but I believe that all started at the end of 2007 and carried over into 2008. Still, I love @SusanReynolds! Glad you brought it up.
Hey, I changed my Twitter avatar to a pea every Friday to become Pea-sano. :)

For me, my 2008 Twitter Moment was when the Mars Phoenix found water on Mars and we were the first ones to hear about it - http://twitter.com/MarsPhoenix/status/873892564

I think the whole Mars Phoenix Twitter project was a huge breakthrough for Twitter in 2008. It was fun and educational to watch the updates / progress of our robotic friend on its mission to explore the unknown atmosphere of Mars. R.I.P. @MarsPhoenix. (http://twitter.com/MarsPhoenix/status/999398896)

I hope to see more projects like this in 2009.

What about Twitterati health? @Tdefren promoted 'Mo for Movember to encourage guys to get prostate checkups. It's the first time I grew a 'stache for a good cause.

This is an awesome list. Oh, the memories ; ) I was so into the Color Wars, but didn't even know about the winners. Looks like my team (Orange) came in third -- with the most golds! Hah.

VagQuake was a good one, though. Haha.

I think that the SXSW ill-fated interview of Mark Zuckerberg by Sarah Lacy deserves and honorable mention. The Twitter stream derailed the interview. Over time the story has softened (and changed), but during the on-stage interview and over the following days it was an amazing example of the power of Twitter. It was right then I knew that Twitter was a real movement.

    @thom singer
Very true. SXSW08 was indeed a big story this past year for the reason you stated...it clearly demonstrated to all "outsiders" how powerful Twitter can be. It also showed that this power can be in a positive or as in this case in a negative manner. Eventually, the whole story was told but only after the Twitter maelstrom subsided.

    Rocking good article!
    Thanks for the highlights.

I think the #yahoo moments of the blow by blow yahoo layoffs were pretty amazing. Nothing like that has happened at D*** yet but the attrition is just as bad. It was simply amazing to see (listen) to the tweet from both the leaving and the left behind.

My favorite twitter moment of 2008 was a tweet from GaryVee

    >> Oh yeah, and there was the @joetheplummer, @plumberjoe, @joe-theplumer, and @joe-the-plummer phenom... I hear he's still trying to sell subscriptions to his new blog (posts #ing in the 10's). Hopefully the guy will sink into the vortex of culture--kicking and screaming ignorant racial epithets most likely.

To think I was so in the dark about the Motrin Moms controversy! Thanks Mashable, and thanks Twitter!

Huge year for Twitter. Unfortunately I missed out on the Superbowl coverage and the Color Army Experiment. That was before my tweeting days. Great list, thanks for sharing.

Great list. First natural disaster I lived through on twitter - LA earthquake. My family was down there and at Disneyland while it happened.

No mention about the Republicans holding out in Congress when the Democrats left for the break before the conventions, and trying to repeal the ban on offshore drilling? That entire event was enacted over Twitter and Qik with the #dontgo hashtag. You could include it with your election coverage mention, but with that and TwitTheVote both really brought politics closer to a lot of people, including myself.

My most memorable twitter moment of the year was when I heard about the student James Karl Buck who tweeted "arrested" and was able to free himself from a prison in Egypt. I had been resisting twitter up until then. I broke down and joined when I realized that twitter might not just be fun, it could save my life.
