I've also release a free image editor. Unlike most of them, the images are not uploaded whether it is the source image of the finished image. It's also more oriented to treat several images at once than one by one.

There's a new one call pictureful.com, it has automatic red-eye removal and some other simple things. It also has some overlay effects. check it out pictureful.com (Free Online Photo Editor).

Graphita is different to the others. They are largely photo editors doing basic image correction and resizing/shaping, which is is a fairly common technology.

Graphita is about adding high quality graphical effects which enable a previously ordinary photo to connect and communicate in a way which it didn't before.It is allowing creative self expression on the zillions of digital images which exist in the world. Plus they have made it sooo easy and intuitive.

I recently launched an online image editor called Recrio (http://recrion.net). It's not quite as polished as some of these but it does have a lot of filters, multiple layers and captions.

Great review. I find Pixenate best editor to recommend to friends and family on the fly. For exactly the reason you highlighted. I recommend and know they won't need to get back to me with further questions.

The good news is that average people now have alternatives to paying hundreds of dollars to Adobe for professional software.

Truth is, there are half a dozen settings on most digital cameras that can effectively achieve the sort of basic image correction most of these online image editors do.

Graphita is unique amongst the choices here in that it offers expressive graphical effects: captions, thought bubbles and such.

I tested a few web apps for making podcast album art while at work - basically needed to resize, add background fill and text. Though i don't love the UI, I ended up using Phixr because of the Flickr integration and the ability to add text (which most don't have). The Lomo filter is pretty cool too.
