Just because the internet is global, does not mean every company with an internet presence needs to start serving a global audience, but when you are already established somewhere (like MTV) it is very important to work out the legal problems OR at least implement a slick technical solution online so that people in places with some kind of content or copyright issue can still have a good user experience. Better to hide the video they can't see than flip them off when they try to view it.

I'm an American living in Japan and get super frustrated by the "can't play this content in your area" fail messages. It's not just MTV. Many other sites fail also. It's making me think I need to spoof my IP or something.

Isn't the point of any art (music, movies, etc.) for it to be seen as many eyeballs as possible? Hence, there should be no restrictions on them, especially music. If I want to support a band or group or singer, then I will buy a ticket to their/her/his concert.

If you don't know how broadcast sales work, it seems unfair of distributors to prevent viewers from watching content worldwide. However, it's a false premise that the U.S. distributor owns the rights to broadcast in Croatia. Producers sell broadcast rights by region. It's a hassle for the distributor to block Croatia. They don't like it, but they have to block because they haven't paid for Croatia. If your position is U.S. distributors should have to pay for Croatia, the consequence would be even more commercials on American television to pay for it.

Bingo! I'm a former resident of the States now living in New Zealand-- and I am amazed how much online content I no longer have access to. I can't watch sitcoms online at nbc.com anymore, and I agree with David... not being able to listen to music on Pandora sucks and is a huge shock. AARRRGH! It really does make me hate these companies also.

Same for Fnac VOD, I'm french living in Japan, and was very happy to find films in French in this part of the globe ! For me and my kids (for educative purposes)

I've done all the subscribe process, entered my visa (wich is issued from a French Bank), filled my cart with lots of movies... checked out... then got blocked because of my IP and some silly people.

The Movie and Music Industry is so... what could we say... is just able to claim "we don't sell anymore because of Internet Piracy" with not even looking at themselves.

I hate these guys too !

I've experienced exactly the same thing trying to watch Formula 1 videos on the British ITV website. In Australia we get the ITV F1 TV broadcast and many Australians read the ITV F1 website, but we get blcocked from watching the web videos. I hat ITV! It isn't just the BBC iPlayer, though, ... it is also the games on the Doctor Who website and even the BBC YouTube Channel. I understand why the BBC does it but it also means that I don't feel bad finding ways around their restrictions when I can.

yeah, but the BBC isn't a commercial service, we pay for them to make content out of a Licence Tax, kind of compulsary pay-per-whetheryouviewitornot. They were talking about opening up an ad-supported version for non UK-residents, which would be a good move (I wish we could have it ad supported rather than paying Â£100+ a year for something I never watch.. but I digress). Either that, or a subscription model, where you buy an account (like I have with Sky).

YES! To both the post and so many of the comments. I live in Chile and would happily watch US TV shows through the networks' website or Hulu, but since I get that stupid message, I go through SideReel. Some nice advertisers in Japan get to promote their products to me - I assume, for all I know the characters around the video player could be anything - rather than US advertisers whose products I might actually buy! It's stupid and it turns me off to even trying to use those sites once I move back. Frankly, as a user, I don't want to think about copyrights and justifications, I just want to watch TV without effort.

And @modemlooper clearly this post doesn't suck - it has lots of comments from other people who've had the same experience. It may not affect you, but that doesn't make it some obscure thing that only has relevance on a personal blog.

They were streaming that stuff domestically, but coz I was in another country, no soup for me.

I guess living in the US my entire life, I've never run into this issue before. I'm actually surprised to see that whether or not you can view specific content depends upon where you're located. I guess this whole time I've been dumb to the fact that there was a copyright issue of this nature at all. Best of luck to you all outside of the US. I'm completely with you - something should be done, and it should be done ASAP. In the meantime, find those loopholes and run with them!

I completely agree with the text and the article above, I'm in the UK too. The thing about the BBC iPlayer is that it's funded by the TV license which is only paid by those in the UK. You might have paid this for the three years you lived here, I don't know, I don't agree with it (the license fee) and I wouldn't care if it opened up to all internationally.

Also, the nicest "You can't watch this video because of where you live" is the Adult Swim one, which is "Hello International Buddy!" and then goes on to say how much it sucks. :)

Anyway, I know you're reader base is huge, so thanks to Stan for writing this.

I'm sick of being sent competitions (by record companies and sites I'm signed up to), I trundle along, do it, then read the small print "Only available to US residents".. so why are you sending it to my .co.uk address??? gah.... a big, advertised online competition should be available to users in any country. The Internet DOES NOT equal the USA. I don't care about postage rates etc, you sort that out. If you're not making it available to people outside the US, then STOP sending it to people outside the US. "Erm... but thats too hard to do, we don't know what country you live in"... EXACTLY MY POINT.
