I think that's great advice, and can be generalized... A lot of folks looking to start up a business are paranoid about talking about their ideas. The truth (and the cliche) is that ideas are 2 a penny - it is how you execute on them that matters.

And the more people you talk to, the easier it is to refine the idea, and find the right mix of people to make it happen.

It's a good book. Mostly, when people compile their best articles, the book they put together feels lazy. In Guy's case, he really put work into compiling, editing and drawing bigger meaning from the pieces he put together in Reality Check.

Go out to networking events and developer meetups. Get to know some coders and start brainstorming ideas with them.

Hi Andrew - great post (you may remember, we met in April at the LA TechCrunch MeetUp, btw).

I love Guy's advice. It's always frank, sensible and mixed with a bit of humor. I've been following him for over a decade and he just keeps getting more interesting. The guy has energy and takes risks and I admire those attributes immensely. I hope more startups and entrepreneurs heed his advice - those are the kinds of minds that make fantastic clients for us.

And, as a virtual company 10 years strong, we've definitely got #5 covered. Interesting concept for more traditional companies to follow.

I think that's exactly right. A successful technology business is exactly that - a technology business. If you don't have both aspects covered by people with skin in the game, it is going to be that much harder; and that much riskier.

That's not to say that you *can't* get funded without having built something already, but it is going to be an awful lot harder, and you'll give up an awful lot more for the money.

Freelance work, you can hire a team to do it for you (elance, getafreelance, rentacoder) there are lots of websites.

Although for rule #6, how can you build a product / prototype without hiring a developer?
I guess you need to have a tech guy in your team ;)
