Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2008/06/18/nytimes-timespeople/

    I would look beyond the bookmarking aspect of the service, though that might end up being a large component for many users.

    To me the draw is that I can subscribe to feeds of NYT on content, surfaced by other people, that is of interest and I may miss otherwise (as opposed to subscribing to feeds because you know the person but not excited by the content).

    Even within our internal dev group I found a range of content that I otherwise would have missed.

    But its early days... so we'll see where it goes.

    One thing I'm anxious to see is what people will do with the data (if anything) - we made a point of allowing the data to be freely available in xml and json...

    Yes and often it all comes down to people thinking, since social networking is so popular let's just build it into every site. Instead tap into existing social networks with widgets and apps, don't create your own.

    If I want to share news with friends I can do it globally on any site in the world with Digg and others.

    One thing though...there's an apparent contradiction in this article, doesn't Mashable itself have a [my.mashable.com] social community off to the right of this comment?

    Well I guess you guys are 'social networking news' so it would be unimaginable for you not to have one built in :-) and 'Don't Mass alone' sounds cool, lol.

    @jigajosh You're correct on many points. I too would argue that its better to tap into existing social networks rather than be another flavor-of-the-month social site.

    And I think you'll find that this is the natural direction for TimesPeople to go. I'd ask you bear in mind that this is a first step.

    No problems here, I just think sometimes it's easier to link people to add apps or add a widget then have them signup and add a bookmarklet simply to find and share news [from one site] with friends.

    It might be a fun extra feature to have so why not, if the devs have nothing better to do...my point was just in regards to it being a strategy to gain traffic. I do think however it will strengthen the loyalty and make it feel like a community, and that never hurts.

    Cheers,

    @Paul Glazowski,

    Nice recap Paul. Anyway, I can only see that you're a little bit here. I wondering if this famous Mashable also want to create that stuff too. Yeah, ladies and gentleman, please help me on welcoming ... the MashablePeople (what about other name like MashableDude). But why not. Sometimes it's a good idea to have like this one too.

    Viva NYT.
