I think it had far less to do with the humor of the Bill/Jerry spots (I, even as a Mac user, found them to be hilarious) and way more to do with the fact that most people just didn't get the point of the ads. The type of humor that was being used was just not broad or far reaching enough to make sure that the "average" viewer really got them. And that was the downfall of the campaign. The fact that most of the "I'm a PC" celebs have been spotted using iPhones and Macs for personal use will be the downfall of the new one.
  • Merredith · 1 year ago
I was surprised to find that most people I talked to liked them, too. People seemed to genuinely enjoy seeing Bill's humorous side, or at least his ability to laugh at himself.

I agree that the Bill/Jerry ads were memorable, even if they didn't have a lot to do with PCs...I felt they were headed that direction. As for the, "most celebs use an iPhone" argument offered above... a lot of iPhone users I know are using their iPhones as 2nd phones or very expensive digital photo frames, and reverting to Blackberries and N95s while they wait for the bugs to get worked out. Just sayin'.

I love the new campaign. The I'm A PC is already a hit amongst average PC users, FYI.

if you check the Windows website. you can see the 4 parts of the campaign: i`m a PC, Gates and Seinfeld, Windows vs Walls and The Possibilities.

all these four are part of the campaign. there is a third commercial already out of pre-production and ready to play with Gates and Seinfeld and one already in pre production. people are getting ahead of themselves. unless we have a full month without a new Gates and Seinfeld Ad. how can anyone dare to say they have been dropped if Microsoft and CP+B are stating otherwise right now?????

What? I loved those ads, really good advertisement. Not direct in your face, but everybody knew about it, everybody wrote about it. I think MS got what they wanted. Publicity!

    I'm a PC...

...But not one of those crappy ones Apple talks about in the adverts, because I run Linux, which does most of Apple says is so great about them and none of the stuff that Windows has problems with. Best of all, the thing that Apple don't like to talk about, the price of Linux systems (hardware etc.) is much cheaper than Apple's.

The thing is, Apple won't talk about Linux in their ads, because it's a smaller competitor than them, so why are Microsoft not only talking about Apple but responding to Apple's own marketing.

You wouldn't catch Coke talking about Pepsi.

Actually now i've found the adverts and they don't mention Apple.
  • jason · 1 year ago
i like both sets of ads and i think each does its own thing.

when it boils down to an argument of msft battling apple i wonder if that's really true. what i mean is, how large is apples share of the personal computing market? i'm talking how many people own an iphone or ipod but what percentage of people own a mac versus a windows machine? my guess is an overwhelming majority and while apple has probably seen their percentage rise over the past few years, is it by so much that msft is sweating it? i'd wager no.

but these ads are great because they accomplish one of two things that a marketer develops an ad campaign for - sales or branding. and since any little move that's made with the ads (jerry and bill ads don't make sense, jerry and bill are out, i'm a pc, etc) causes more discussion it only serves to reinforce the msft brand. even the apple fanbois, who state that the ads are horrible and osx is the best os, even they are helping build up msft’s brand.

all-in-all this is a brilliant ad campaign and my hat goes off to cp+b.

message to all tech bloggers: please, stick to writing about tech, because you don't know sh*t about advertising.
  • Jason Palmer · 1 year ago
Yes, the new Microsoft ads are ridiculously expensive and just as much pointless. None of them have a clear message promoting Windows. The only thing this tells me is that even the creators of Vista can't give the public a good reason to use it!

I wrote a post on my blog about my interpretation of the underlying message behind all of the ads:

Check it out and leave comments!

That is exactly what I have been saying. Its not like Microsoft was thinking, hey these people don't even know what windows is. Of course people do, and maybe this will remind them of that. It really blows my mind all these tech bloggers that are so against these, yet talk about them so much.

What is it with MS bashers these days? Whatever MS does will be flamed and whatever Apple does will be greeted like the home coming of Jesus Christ.
Don't get me wrong im an Apple user (and like the majority of folks a Windows user in the office) Ive been experiencing a series (aka many) problems with my Macbook pro recently and that combined with this obsessive Apple fanboyism ive seriously considered moving back the Windows. I mean, for example, look at the iPhone, if MS released exactly the same phone just imagine the flow of negative comment and further MS bashing. It would go insane. Oh but Apple releases a flawed device, folks just say "its OK lets just wait for the next firmware release and then we should experance fewer crashes and dropped calls". I find this attitude amazing, almost brain washed in many respects. I mean its a phone... it should not drop calls and it certainly not crash all of the time. People... the most basic function of any phone is to complete a call.. there are absolutly no excuses for a phobe to drop calls... non what so ever.

    I say go MS!!!

a "regular, does-not-consume-rss, hacks mashups, etc." friend blogged about how she felt after viewing the commercials.

human beings love the self-identifying w/ products, brands, political parties (see Sarah Palin effect). whether the campaign will last in the long run .... who know.

Here's a suggestion Steve - why don't you go back to talking in front of the mirror because you obviously don't know how to play nice with others - especially those trying to have a conversation
  • HL · 1 year ago
And advertisers know sh*t all about anything, so that puts them one below tech bloggers and about 1001 below everyone else...

    Hi,I'm a PC!
  • Jaysus · 1 year ago
Steven Hodson doesn't know what he's talking about. This is a "bullshit" article if I ever saw one. Head over to Digg and read the comments about the ads. They are a hit and much better than the Apple ads.

    Hi Steve,

I think you should give the "I'm a PC" adverts another chance. I think they are quite ingenious. They take the "I'm much hipper than you" message of the Mac adverts and use that very strength against Apple. The "I'm a PC" adverts are clearly giving a message to everyone who isn't a "hip college student" and saying, PC's are for normal working class people, stick with what you know. There's a clear message that the "hipper than thou" Mac users are not dwelling in reality. Try to look at these ads from the view point of a PC users. They are quite well done and deserve another look.
