Sounds interesting, but http://code.google.com/apis/opensocial is 404...

No doubt this will put the hurt on Facebook. Probably more damaging than the MySpace API.

I'm especially excited to hear how this will work along with ning

This post was completely free of content. The coup de grace was your decision not to elaborate on the weakness of Google's solution vs. Facebook. Will Google's distributed approach best Facebook's walled garden?

    Mashable's expert analysis: "Nope."

@mrshl, agreed. should have let the new guy mark post on this one.

Sounds like application developers can now easily milk the long tail of web 2.0 social networks

I think this will hurt Facebook. Barrier to entry for other social networks will be much lower and niche communities will thrive. Facebook are going to have to decide whether they open up their social graph or not and, if they don't, sooner or later people will start to migrate away.

I agree, I think this should be pretty sweet, and we'll see even more developers since all those who avoided learn FBML will get in on it.

again, I'm just really interested in seeing how this effects Ning more than the other networks.

I love how this enterprising reporter got Flixster's name wrong. Good one, NYT. Keeping up on your unique standard of journalism, I see. Did anyone bother to check that Frixster doesn't exist? Or was the editorial team too busy counting its profits from downsizing all the copy editors to notice?

A comment that is neither witty NOR insulting:

"...neither Facebook and MySpace don’t need to be a part of OpenSocial."

"...neither Facebook and MySpace don’t need to be a part of OpenSocial."

"...neither Facebook and MySpace don’t need to be a part of OpenSocial."

"...neither Facebook and MySpace don’t need to be a part of OpenSocial."

    Sincerely,

    Chief of Police, Grammar P.D.
