Nice long list of plugins. However, as you pointed out, it's important not to go overboard. Also, when considering AJAX in any form, it's probably a good idea to check if the page isn't crippled without JavaScript - not only for older browsers, but also for some RSS readers that have integrated web browsers.

It turns out that the default django comments mechanisms for fighting spam are not very effective at all, contrary to my expectations. So i had to bring reCAPTCHA back. But then i figured i might as well do some kind of ajax comment form if i'm going to rewrite my commenting. A few problems cropped up, and it's still ugly, but it works now, and i haven't had a single spam comment since, whereas i consistently had a couple a day before.

There are so many options with Wordpress and it can get to be a little overwhelming...

Has anyone used the poll plugin?
Some folks have created Ajax (http://24ways.org/2005/edit-in-place-with-ajax) scripts http://www.raproject.com/ajax-edit-comments/ and jquery to do something similar. In fact there is a php library to do it.
Commentors can comment on a wordpress blog once logged, you'd think there would be a similar function for posts and pages for an administrator.
