I think some people are missing one point here. The BBC could have turned round and ordered YouTube to remove all clips of it's shows.

Now, what is not common knowledge, they are using YouTube to seed high quality clips which will (eventually) feedback to the BBC with iPlayer when launced later on this year.

It's that kind of thinking that's been holding the BBC back. They've stated that the YouTube thing has no relationship to the license fee, and the ad revenue will likely mean that the BBC will have more cash for programming (of course they won't reduce the fee, though!).

My question is this: if you live in the UK and you don't have a TV, will they still force you to pay the licensing fee for viewing clips on YouTube, even though that content is ad-supported? Personally, I think doing IP address checks and not showing ads to UK residents would be stupid, since it assumes that you must have a TV and be paying the licensing fee.

US media companies are too short-sighted to even consider a similar deal. BBC is planting the seeds and the Y-gen will be its biggest audience for the next decade. Smart move.

Very interesting news. The only thing that troubles me is that the BBC are supporting this with advertising. Us in the UK pay our license fee to pay for the BBC, and they are using YouTube, a supposedly free medium, to get advertising revenue - something they're not allowed to do on TV...

Ok - so this is annoying. How come the UK tax payer has to pay for the BBC in order for everyone else around the world to watch it for free?

A deal like this defeats the very model the BBC has operated on and I for one feel we should demand out license fee back!
