Hi Mark - just wanted to mention for Australian based parents there is an online babysitter directory and community called Babysitterdirectory.com.au. We are unique in the that we are completely free for parents and babysitters/nannies to use. That means no registration or subscription fees.

I agree with everyone who has recommended Care.com. I've personally had great success with it (for occasional babysitters) and my sister found her (great) nanny there. I've been impressed with the website (really easy to use, lots of great articles and advice), and the quality of sitters I've found there. Currently we have three women who we call when we need a sitter, all of whom we found on Care.com. One is a teacher, one is a nearby college student majoring in child development, one is a mom herself.

How does care.com ensure every care giver is safe? This is an incredibly irresponsible statement if it is coming from the care.com team. I actually heard from an agency very recently who said they had a new client who hired someone from Care who ended up having a record, even though the "background check" on care said she didn't. No Nanny or Sitter site with any integrity should be lulling parents into a false sense of security. The "background" checks that cost $10 to conduct are probably relying on National Databases that are completely unreliable. Nanny agencies with 25 years in the business can tell you they come across nannies who lie on their applications all the time, have phony references that are usually friends or family, how can a "team of Moms" reviewing online applications "ensure the candidates are safe?"

They have plans as cheap as US$10 a month, with background and reference checks, and all of the caregivers are pre-screened by a group of moms, ensuring they're safe.

I have owned and operated NannyClassifieds.com for almost 10 years now. Parents need to understand that many, many quality nannies (not sitters)refuse to use free services like Craigslist because they are very dangerous places. (Let's not forget the nanny who was killed by someone who placed an ad on Craigslist last year.) Not only is there potential for physical danger, these free sites are full of scam artists who offer the nannies fake jobs, send them phony checks and then back out of the "deal" and ask for part of their money back. The old Nigerian Scam. We review every family's account when they purchase a subscription on our site. We notify our nannies of any potential scams. Nannies know and trust our service for this reason.

When you look at some of the numbers some of these sitter sites are claiming, you really need to be aware that many of them never retire profiles. Some of these sites have sitters who haven't logged on in over 2 years. These are not viable candidates, but they keep them there because the number is so impressive. Our nanny profiles automatically expire after 45 days. Families know when they come to our site that we only have nannies who are actively looking for work.

Definitely think our friends at Care.com should be included. They do a great job for babysitting as well as other sort-of household/personal services type things (Pet Care, Housesitting, etc.)

You can also check out needish.com! You can either post privately, to get recommendations from people you know in real life (without having to individually call them all) or post a public Need and get tips from other people in the area as well. We're just getting started, but everyone's invited to post their Needs for babysitters or anything else :)
