I think a site every inventor, or wanna-be inventor needs to explore a bit is called HalfBakery.com

It "Puts the 'reek' in Eureka" and is just a fun place to stretch your brain and have fun (not all ideas are serious or worth actually trying to bring to market).

Excellent suggestions! I originally had Blender but their site was down for a while so I removed them. They're back up now it seems so it's a great tool to have, especially for the price! :)

I would add to your documenting tools a couple of other ones which may be more useful than Gimp.

Inkscape (Vector Graphics program)

Blender 3D (Open Source 3D modeling Software)

Google Sketchup (3d Model/Environment software)

Qipit (www.qipit.com) works great for recording all those ideas inventors come up with every day. Whether saving the idea scribbled on a napkin or when needing to save an elaborate whiteboard from a brainstorming session. You just need your camera phone or a digital camera.
