pligg is not worth

it started as an English translation of http://www.meneame.net
and that community started to ask for more, more and more features and now is a mess. it is slow, unusable and ugly

in my opinion thereâ€™s no point to buy pligg.

if you want to buy â€œusersâ€ there are better choices
if you want to buy a â€œdigg cloneâ€ you can use the source code for free
if you want to buy a â€œdomainâ€, think a bit and do it (14U$D a year)

What are they looking for?
they say you donâ€™t have time to spend on pligg because they have day-jobs, but if they sell it for big money, they won't need the day-jobs anymore and nor taking care of pliggâ€¦
sounds strange for me.

if Pligg business model is worth, it should allow you to hire someone or even work on it full-time.

why should someone buy a product (website, users and business model) if it canâ€™t even generate enough income to hire a bunch of geek-monkeys to run it?

No one really thinks Pligg is going to sell for a big amount right? What would somebody be investing in?

The code? It's open source, so it's free. And the truth is the code is in horrible shape - with classes embeded in templates, serious usability issues in the default template and a desperate need for database optimization. The developers are walking away from it before it even hits v1.0. And only a couple of weeks ago a new developer ran away from code claiming that a complete rewrite was easier than working with the current code (take that with a grain of salt but it's a sign).

The community? Pligg is still in it's infancy and so is the community surrounding it. The vast majority of Pligg sites are just quick digg knock offs with few users. The few successful Pligg sites are heavily modified and required a ton of extra work to produce. (Think videosift - which is probably still running on a very old version of pligg).

The domain? The web site design?
How much is that really worth?

Future revenues from selling mods and templates? There was a recent discussion in the Pligg forum on this and the community seems split on whether mods and templates should even be sold. But there was some agreement that there isn't big money to be made from either anyway - especially in Pligg's current state.

Wow, this is amazing news. Pligg is great.
I did a search for them on compete.com and see they are up 8197.2% in the past month and up yearly over 6733.0% Quite a bit of growth I'd say.

Kudos! and I hope all the pligg devs the best of luck being filthy stinking rich. :)

I believe it! Pete, out of curiosity, since there are so many submissions, how do you decide which ones to write about? Are most of the submissions vanilla installs with an hour or two of customization, and thus you write about the ones that are truly novel, or significantly enhanced, or are backed by an actual business/management unit?

Interesting. I can imagine that running a popular FOSS platform for free starts could start to wear thin.

I'm assuming that the actual software will remain open source, though. Or if it doesn't, that someone will start up a fork.

This sale also sounds like there might be a business opportunity for companies who specialize in installing, supporting, and customizing open source apps like Pligg. That's a direction I'm thinking of going in, anyhow.

We have made these decisions to sell because Pligg has become a full-time project without any staff able to handle all of the responsibilities of running the site and Project. This is Kbeeveer46 from the Pligg forum. I have confirmed this story with Pete and this is 100% real. There was some confusion with the email because we use gmail with our @pligg.com email addresses. I want to verify what you will be bidding on. First, the domain pligg.com and all the files for the website which includes template, graphics etc. The forum/community is also included. You would also be given access to the Pligg code SVN repository where we hope you will continue developing Pligg.

As you can see from the story, the developers would be happy to continue to develop Pligg, but the business side of Pligg is getting to much for us to handle because Pligg has grown way beyond out expectations.
