As for mobile integration and that sort of thing: Being a university student, I can say that for some reason, I've seen very few 18-20 year olds using their phones for social networking. In my personal opinion, thats more hype than practicality.
Some part of our vision for Wevent is to have higher amount of personal event cataloguing and aggregate community event development, just like Eventful and Going.
As for the German Wevent, we've known about them for some time, but we were in development and acquired the name before they did :D

Ok, so if you have known about the german one that would have been time to eventually change name or communicate with each other.

Well, the German site came out after the .com was acquired by us. Why they chose a .org, I'm not sure. They're also a German language site, and serve a primarily German audience. We're english and serve the North American audience.

As a matter of fact, the comment where you say that you're "aiming at the North American audience" is one of things you should change in Wevent. Like many other services out there, you just ignore that your service can be used globably. In Wevent's case, as a matter of fact we users can specify our country (so it's not for North America only), but we're allways forced to choose a two-letters string to identify our "state", which is quite ridiculous for every person or event not based in North America.

Hi Mike, the domain was actually registered for a while. We came up with the name and acquired it way before Wevent.org was around. Then we went under development, literally for a year, while the German popped up. By the time they had arrived, we were very deep into development. We have contracts and transactions to prove that, but its not something I'm too concernced about right now. Thanks

Kosmar: I think they're quite happy with their .org, I believe they are a non profit project, hence they went for the .org without asking about the .com first.
Its just a case of us having the same general idea, and liking the same name, without knowing about each other. I think that the fact that we moved first, committed to acquiring the .com, and had our project underway far before theres was underway helps show that. The only difference is we took so much longer to launch.

As far as I remember, wevent.org chose their Domain because others were simply grabbed without displaying any kind of content. I bet they're going for profit sooner or later - and as kosmar said, its more relevant to have an established brand instead of a simple domain registration... to block the name first.

Well, while I appreciate your concern, unfortunately neither of us can really speak for the German project. If they intended to be a commercial project, why not go for the .com? It wasn't available when I wanted it either, I had to contact the owner and pry it outta their hands.
As much as I'd like to speculate, it isn't fair to either side to be having these sort of discussions, without one party to help clarify.
So for now, I'll be resting my comments on that. Thanks
