I wish there was some way to reject a recommendation so it doesn't keep popping up. I've reached the point where most of the recommendations are people in my circle of acquaintances who I don't like and don't want to be my Facebook friend. I get tired of seeing them every time I log on. In LinkedIn, you can say "I don't know this person," and they don't pop up again, but I don't see how to do that in Facebook.

I use Facebook quite a bit for social networking and practically speaking this application really slows down the adding process for profile pages and groups. It might not seem like a big deal however in this day and age when speed is all so important, in getting things done online, it matters.

Kristen: I think you've completely misinterpreted that notification. It's not automated.
Facebook added a "suggest a friend" feature a few weeks ago. It's the second item on this help page:
It's a link that appears below the profile photo of new members. It lets you recommend them as friends to other Facebook members. (The link goes away after a few weeks, apparently.)
In other words, that notification is from somebody you know, telling you that somebody else you know recently joined Facebook.
Paula: Follow the "see all" link in the "People You May Know" box. There's an "X" next to each person labeled "Do not show this person."

In terms of automated, she's referring to the "People You May Know" feature, which is what the article in The Observer talked about. I've edited that in to make it more clear.

I think the feature would be less invasive if it were an optional feature much like many facebook applications. The service could be useful for new facebook users looking to identify people they know on the site and grow their friend base. For seasoned pro's with well established networks, however, the tool is a nuisance.

Adam O was right, I was referring to automated in the overall sense that Facebook is installing multiple avenues for introducing people that may or may not know each other (or want to know each other)--some more directly than others.

LinkedIN is pretty interesting and sneaky...
I'm 95% sure that when you use their email importer friend invite/connect tool, it stores all the email addresses in their DB.
Then when users sign up with a matching email, it suggests these people to you.
I've had sales reps from my local gym show up in here, etc. People that I would have absolutely no other connection to, other than the fact we've exchanged emails.

Holy comments batman! I only read a few of them. Firstly.. I've seen the "people you may know" I have added a few people from this area that maybe I didn't think of adding or quite honestly I forgot about. This could be useful and frankly if I don't want to add someone I won't. It's a lot easier then searching for people so I do kinda like it.
As for the friend recommendations. I haven't even seen this. I don't know where this resides and I didn't even hear about it. Same thing.. friend recommendations could be useful as long as users don't get flooded. I don't necessarily think that is crossing the line for the friend recommender... but when you have people pop up that you don't know it's not really a great recommendation. Unless their hot. :P Nah I don't know. This is actually one of the smart features that facebook has installed.
I don't believe this is intrusive as a feature... I believe if people are concerned about this there are privacy settings which allow the user to block themselves from showing up in search which should roll over to people not seeing you in "people you may know"

Has anyone received an email from Facebook resetting your password? I did. I've been using Hellotxt to update both my Twitter and Facebook status at the same time.I just started using it and added Facebook to it yesterday. At 11:21 am I received the following email:

I think that facebook is a great source for people to meet and not be so lonely. :) i belive that people can just go on facebook to meet plp that have met before in there younger childhood yrs and can regain there friendships. Ppl in this world need to not be PIGS! and just use facebook so you think ohh look theres that girl.or boy lets rape.that is totally WRONG! dont ever touch little ppl or not even dont touch anyone at all that you can get charged for!, and all you ppl out there that do, do that should be charged and should be in jail for even having thought to do something like that!!!!!. that makes me so angry i think facebook should be for people to chat and remember childhood memoires. :] that is personally what i think about facebook!!!!
