Social networks of these kind are never really going to take off in a big way like myspace simply because parents do not have too much time like myspace teens. Even if it does, the growth will be steady. Also, myspace has a lot of plugins, flash games and widgets which myspace users can plug into. Since parentsconnect focusses on parents am not too sure whether such other services will ever be viable for them

Parents may have less time than their kids to use on internet, but they have a lot of questions to ask, topics to search about, and experience to share ! Here in France, we have several websites with discussion boards for parents (mainly used by moms), that really are very popular. But they lack these great new web features for now (except some blog making)... I hope such networks will come for french moms too.

About ParentsConnect, I think the interface is very confusing : talking about boards, conversations, topics, advices, stories, articles... and the "host parents" system seems invasive... but I had a look at some of the team blogs, and they are really interesting and speaking about real life and experience and opinions. So, in fact, that can be a real positive thing to make all the website launch.

Great post. Pete, just an update...Minti is now out of beta and whilst we (the founders) get involved, the community now produces the content on the site with roughly 23,500 plus active contributions - ie. article, blog post, group, forum post, comment or vote. More and more parents are using the net to connect and say hi to friends from all over the world online (there is time, instead of watching 3 hours of TV when the kids go to bed or are taking a nap during the day for younger kids)...at Minti we are aiming to create a place were advice is accessed eventually by GEN Y kids who eventually grow up and get married and have kids and whom the internet is the main source of information. We need the experienced parents to create the content to pass the golden advice on and provide a place to reach out when times get tough.

We have members looking to have children, and parents with 1 to 8 children, and a host of amazing life stories, with members aging from teen parents to grandparents.

Pete, it would be great if you had the time to explore Minti and check out all the features, or we'd be happy to take you through the site...it is sometime difficult to relate, but if you have kids, Minti is a place were we aim to empower parents, something that is a miss sometimes in the real world.

I wanted to create a site that help empower parents to change the world for parents, one piece of advice at a time.

...From the feedback from our members it is relatively easy to post a question and get answers almost straightaway, write your own advice in the form of an article, promote your own craft on your own homepage, with it's own lounge to hang out with your other Minti friends in, write and mirror external blogs and subscribe to any type of content on the site...and these are the only a few I have described...there is plenty more.

    Cheers,
    Rachel Cook,
    Co-founder, Minti

I am a minti member and just think it is fantastic... I have not been on for a year yet, but I have been on almost every night since I signed on..I do have a life outside the website but can't help myself but log in as often as possible. Very addictive (I have been on vacations and of course only go on when my son is asleep).

The people are amazing and all the advice comes from their own experiences... LOVE IT...

I've become a huge fan of ParentsConnect. There is so much information on it and the community is great!
