I would like t know what experience anyone has had with cheaper airline tickets. What can you suggest to spend the least amount possible on air fare? I don't have much money, but am sure there is a cheaper way and some advice.

I like Kayak as well but I've noticed that most of these airfare sites don't feature smaller airlines like Southwest.

A great site for us Aussies is http://www.bestflights.com.au as it has a whole bunch of domestic and international flights that range from the cheapest (and are quite cheap!) to of course, the most costly. A great idea is to nab the cheapest price off this site and take it to a travel agent like Flight Centre where they will beat the price even more.

The further away from your date, the cheaper the price. It is certainly not possible to always book months in advance, but you should whenever you can.

Good question. I think these sites have to get the permission of the airlines to be included, so maybe Southwest is denying them? No clue if that is the case, but it is a possibility.

It still takes 10 sites or so to research and then book a trip -- sometimes I back into a low-fare through the hotel like Starwood's SPG (Preferred Guest) -- when hotels and airlines are packaged no one knows where the deep discount is coming from, and that is just where they both like to be; where they can claim they aren't discounting below advertised rates...that said Kiwi Collection and the like have great properties...

Even with all of these resources, I still end up going to southwest.com and finding cheaper flights there. Why don't these other sites include southwest airlines in their search results????

I've never quite understood this timing strategy for airline bookings. Is there some logic behind it, or is it just like you keep watch and if you bump into a good deal, you book it.

I travel a lot and usually use www.sidestep.com ,they search over 200 travel websites
for the best values, so far it works great for me! ;)

Very comprehensive list but i think mobissimo should be included in the list and kayak should be included in the domestic results too.

I'm happy to see some European search engines like Momondo,Skyscanner and Trabber :)

Seriously, I think mobissimo.com is the best by far. It actually probably aggregates most of the sites mentioned, so you are almost guaranteed to find the best deal :)

....In turn, Kayak purchased SideStep for roughly $180 million...for me sidestep was better b4 the sale...and smartertravel.com is most useful in helping to aggregate all fare sales in one weekly email...

I thought http://www.yapta.com would have been on this list. It's a cool start-up in Seattle that tells you when it's the best time to buy tickets (read=when they are priced low).
