First thanks to Greg for correctly indicating the Lycos Europe is not, in any way, a part of Lycos, Inc. here in the US.

Our Webon service is, indeed, Free to Publish. In fact, one can use and explore nearly all the tools Webon provides...without even registering. Only when you're satisfied with the service and like what you've created...and elect to Publish the site-do we ask for simple registration.

Key is that Webon, at the DNA level, is designed to fully support Open Social API & Open ID, thus preserving the investment you have already made in places like AOL, FaceBook and others.

One final note: Kristen's insight in mentioning our Cinema 'Social Viewing' platform is spot-on. By design, it also will soon embrace the same Open principles as our Webon Social Publishing platform.

I work with Lycos and wanted to quickly clarify and respond to Svetlana's comment. Webon is a free service. The free sites come with complete access to the Webon visual editor, style library, and all add-ons. You can make one site, or dozens, all for free while holding up to 300 photos. There is no advertising or any other promotions added to the usersâ€™ sites.

The $8.95 a month personal plan is an optional upgrade that includes a non-Webon branded domain and unlimited photo hosting, and is not a requirement for using the service.

It is definitely an interesting development, especially interesting to me as an owner of Profy, another new blogging platform that seems to do pretty much similar things for a novice blogger. But the trend is obvious - many of us notice that there is a need for a new type of blogging platform, something that makes blogging simpler for users with new mainstream users arriving.

The only problem that I see here is that the $9 per month seems to be too expensive for the target demographic.
