Interesting ways of using Twitter lists. I wonder if companies will start using them for closed beta testing to receive feedback from participants and facilitate the discussion.

This is a great summary. I'm convinced Curating Twitter is the next big thing in the Twitterverse. At the end of the day, journalists have always been there to separate signal from noise and broadcast the most interesting peaces of content.

As a Minneapolis-based media reporter, I'm using Twitter lists to curate all Twittering journalists in the state and Twin Cities. It not only helps me keep track, but provides some value-added for my readers. I'm encouraging them not just to follow the list, but make their own. Like publishing a public database.

@UpstatePA (the twitter for Northeast Pennsylvania) is doing something cool with lists that I haven't seen before. They asked users to tell them what their favorite thing is to do in #UpstatePA, and in return, @UpstatePA would add them to their "coolest people ever" list. Great way to get others to help market their own region that they love!

While the argument over whether lists are "exclusionary" continues, I think lists around timely events are going to mature faster, like the ones outlined in this post. I'm especially looking forward to curated lists around really sticky stories and PR crises. Imagine the enjoyment we all would have gotten out of "Bubble Boy" and "Motrin Moms" reactions lists?

Isn't the whole notion of following exclusionary? I'm feeling a bit confused by what's changed. Twitter seems built on picking your social network. This is just one more way to do it.

Vadim: You're all over news-related social media stuff, and I enjoy reading anything you write.

    Well, just about anything.
  • lavrusik · 1 month ago
Thanks, Daniel. I love this stuff, so that makes it fun to write about. I also think that going into the future, news will become more social. I am just trying to stay ahead of the curve.

For me, twitter lists might play a useful role in automated related information discovery, such as turning up hashtags being used in a particular area, or finding people who are being @'d at a lot within a particular set of people.

For a couple of tools that provide these services, see http://ouseful.wordpress.com/2009/11/02/whats-h...

Here is a question about the Twitter Lists. If you create the list are you automatically part of the list itself? I created a list for a segment of our industry so newbies could just follow the list and get the latest updates from respected sources but wanted to include our own tweets in the mix.

No, and it's sorta hard to add yourself.

I set up my newspaper's Twitter lists by town, so that we can add our followers to their town's list in the hopes that they will interact with each other more.

Oh! Shiny! (reminds me to make use of Twitter lists)

I like the potential of twitter lists in regards to company use. It will be interesting to follow and see what happens!

I think there are definitely good opportunities for news organizations with Twitter Lists. Not a lot is happening yet but it's still just getting going. I checked out 30+ news sites and so far there isn't a lot of activity in terms of List creation or attracting significant numbers of followers to the lists. Two more ideas for you, especially those who are struggling like myself to determine a business model for news organizations in the future.

Lists of companies in a specific city who are on participating on Twitter (http://twitter.com/lfpress/ldn-companies) as well as a subset of that list who are advertisers of the news outlet (http://twitter.com/lfpress/our-advertisers).

We do not charge companies to be on either list, but it does help them see that the 'old newspaper' can still help them reach an audience, and in most cases we are training local advertisers on the power of social media.

We found the bulk of them through a small project we called #weareinLDNONT.

I think it's great that sites like the Guardian and even the Onion use Twitter. The headline is included, with the link; and often in the case of the The Onion their titles are usually the best part.
