They were funded by Baker Capital in February 2005, amount undisclosed, and according to both their non-working imstar.com web site and this wikipedia postt, were shut down in July 2006 due to "funding issues."
I guess "funding issues" is the latest euphemism for "had an exhorbitant burn rate due to a really large, expensive management team." It's a shame really...IMStar sounded like a great idea, and Bandalong had announced an "integration" deal with AOL in November 2005, but the story seems to have a common 1.0 ending...
I think one of the key differences with web 2.0 is that entrepreneurs (a lot of them, anyway) have learned from the heady bubble days of 99-00 that it is so important to keep your burn rates low, your management teams small, and your egos in check.
i think some sim maker should make something better something like sims
