I just released a neat little tool to help you in your SEO efforts. It finds sites within your niche that are ranking that you may be able to buy for very little. It uses dmoz and the internet archive to get a list of sites, then it finds the sites that haven't been updated in a long time (aka abandoned = cheap): http://www.merchantos.com/makebeta/sitefinder301/
