It's a step towards more consumer based 3D printing... I'm excited.

This is great! With affordable 3D Printing + Scanners (NextEngine's 3D Desktop Scanner) the possibilities are endless!!

Imagine this combined with fabricated-on-demand computer systems/electronics and we start getting to the point that anyone can have an idea about a new tech gadget and start building prototypes immediately.

The possibilities are indeed endless (and perhaps a little scary, but I'll leave that for the tin-hat folks :).

Shapeways is one of a growing number of 3D print services, most of which are trying to carve out a niche in this rapidly growing space. Some companies cater to consumers, providing figurine or avatar printing at the touch of a button, while others accept hard-core 3D .STL model files. We cover the news on 3D printing and digital fabrication daily on http://fabbaloo.com, especially new devices, software and especially unusual uses of 3D print tech.

Maybe you would also like to check out the web site of another start-up called fabidoo who offer 3D printing for the mass market.
