Mashable - The Social Media Guide: 2008/06/04/leo-laporte-stickam/

HAH! What a crock of shit. They PAY someone to make their site legit and to try to sweep their other sites off the map. Does Leo know what they do on the Other Floors of the Bank Building? Stickam has scared away lots of great talent over the two years and have not developed their platform to it's potential. Sad Really. But if Leo can use it to his advantage then let him. But I Doubt that even he can lead any change there.

Paying top talent to come to your site and use it exclusively is pretty normal - akin, I'd say, to CBS telling Couric as part of her contract to she must be only on CBS.

    Ouch!

Not sure what you have against Stickam Scott, but they are nice guys - have you met them?

The widescreen aspect ratio for Leo's show is the best on any live streaming site.

Does Leo realize the same company that owns Stickam owns about 7 porn sites?!

I can't imagine how this is good for his brand!

Leo Laporte "The Porn Guy" - Guess in the end the money was too much but feels kinda like dirty money to me.
  • Andy Oliver · 1 year ago
OK people - Stickam does not own any porn sites! Stickam is Stickam.com. Check out the site and let me know if you find any porn! :)

I just hope Leo doesn't take his shirt off like all the girls on there!
  • Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins · 1 year ago
I'd agree. No naked conversations, please. :-p
  • Leo Laporte · 1 year ago
Mark, you should have asked me - I would have told you the truth. Stickam has _not_ sent me any check. We have a revenue sharing deal that I hope will generate MORE than $100,000 a year, but I'm not buying that Bently any time soon. Streaming video numbers are much much lower than audio podcast numbers, at least for now.

Watch twitlive.tv for 10 minutes then tell me I chose the wrong provider!

Leo - pass me your info, and you'll definitely be first on my list of people to call next time a story involves you. I promise I won't go all fan-boy on yah. :-p (mark@mashable.com)

Seriously though, I'm one of your biggest fans, and even if it did involve them shipping you a bentley a month, I'd be happy for ya. I'm looking forward to see how TwitLive develops.

Great! I hope both you and Stickam make much more than $100k a year and can laugh all the way to the bank about it!

If you do - down the road, talk them into implementing some of the stuff those who will eventually want to follow in your footsteps could use? http://tinyurl.com/4w4dah

Meanwhile - I'm hoping that the audience you draw will only increase and it will positively impact Stickam's stability.

You chose the wrong provider. Sure, it looks slick but it doesn't work. See http://ajpresto.blogspot.com/2008/07/stickam-su...

Leo did a twitter poll a while back asking people what one he should use and if I remember right, stickcam was last on the list almost, and ustream was tops. Sad to say it but I can't find myself heading to stickcam to view him, most of the chats over there are full of spammers. If leo and his IRC people had half an effort ustream would have set his stream page to display his life chat. Sad he sold himself out for a terrible service

I watch leo on twitlive.tv quite often and you really don't have to worry about the stickam chat. It's moderated pretty well. And the quality of leo's setup is a lot better then anything on ustream. The other day he had 5000 people watching without a problem. The video is 16:9, super high quality, he has a switcher with multiple camera angles and 3 computers that he can switch between. Watch twitlive.tv just once and you will be convinced that he picked the right service.

Who the hell are your sources, some friend sitting on your couch?

I can't believe you'd use a ValleyWag article as a launching off point, then have the audacity to NOT make any effort to contact Leo regarding this deal. You've essentially admitted that you didn't get the real story from him solely because you didn't have any of his contact information. Fantastic. Perhaps next time there's a government scandal, we can wait for THEM to come forward and tell us what the real deal is. Right?

You may not call yourself a journalist, but by virtue of working for Mashable, you are the purveyor of information. One would think that information would be verified fact.
  • Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins · 1 year ago
My sources are anonymous, Daualipuff, and they'll remain that way unless one of them decides to step forward publicly with the information.

I was shown compelling documentation that a deal was being struck backing up the Valleywag story from a trusted source that has never burned me in the past.

I've actually tried over the years numerous times to contact Leo via email and other means, and never recieved a response. I generally took it as a sign he was busy, and I was a nobody. Particularly, when all the press release posts hit the wire at 3 and 4 in the morning, I had doubts that any of these parties involved would be answering much of anything at that hour.

After an exhaustive search for a platform that works well with an actual live-broadcast show with multiple guests, ease of production and technical control, and stability - I can well understand why Leo would choose Stickam.

If you can find a live-video platform that doesn't crash from time-to-time under the weight of users that Leo's show brings to the table, I'd be impressed.

Stickam has had it's image issues in the past - but how else would you suggest they remedy that other than to attract bigger names like Leo and work with them to re-engineer the focus and the type of offerings they have?

If Leo & Stickam make a million dollars a year thru this revenue sharing deal more power to them. I can only hope that this partnership will mean that Stickam gets more resources to bring a greater stability to their platform and to take the lead in the live-streaming market.
