How about mentioning content management systems such as Joomla!, Mambo and Plone?

Also, the entry for Zope might be a tad misleading. Zope is another content management system with its own template language.

Two Javascript/DOM/Ajax libraries & frameworks which are oddly missing from the list are jQuery (www.jquery.com) and Ext (www.extjs.com).

Both libraries are heavy weights and comparable to any of the ones listed.
  • mark · 2 years ago
I agree. jQeury especially needs to be on the list.
  • gene · 2 years ago
Wow. That's a lot of resources. I wonder how long did it take to get them together in a list.
  • David Appelbaum · 2 years ago
Nice list. If you don't know Plone, you are not old school.
  • dean lee · 2 years ago

    Great list.

@Cameron Thanks for the AjaxPatterns link.

@Rey Right on. JQuery is a fine product and a contender for the "best" all-round Ajax framework right now. In particular, the team has done a great job with documentation (http://jquery.com/), which I value a lot in a web application. I frequently use this third-party API browser for JQuery - http://jquery.bassistance.de/api-browser/.

Another website perfect for a Mashable list is Colourlovers http://www.colourlovers.com/. Social networking for colour lovers everywhere.

Don't forget that Diamond Binding is bloody easy to use and has a free edition for non-commercial use. Only avaliable for Visual Studio 2005 though.

    Diamond Binding homepage.

Theres a couple of good articles about it up on codeproject as well.

Worst marketing ever IMO. They spend ages talking about all the features it has (like seriously impressive list) and then they dont mention you get a full data layer, that doesnt use shitty templates, in like ten mins. :P

Nothing beats billing a few hundred bucks to add a column, when you just add it in the database, hit resync and its on the business objects and good to go :)

This one extends the list of Ajax Tools:

DHTMLX Toolkit (www.dhtmlx.com) provides a set of JavaScript/Ajax components for building rich dynamic web interfaces.

Great resource, thanx! However, I would like to see BugWiki included in the list of bug tracking tools. I've used it for some time now and unlike anything else I have ever tried, this time it really IS easy! Perhaps a litte lightweight for some of you heavy duty coders out there, but for the rest of us it's definately worth a test drive. https://www.bugwiki.com

Its very difficult to get into this business now-a-days. I would recommend trying to find a tutor or taking a class so you can get a heads up.

As for development, Magid Comuputers ( www.magidcomputers.com ), has some of the best services I've known. They created everything from social networking sites (ie: www.thefin.com ) to e-commerce websites (ie: www.smokepitara.com ). Check them out. They also offer SEO Services

An excellent resource already. One more resource that might be mentioned is the Google App Engine. It competes, in some sense, with other products that might be on the list such as popfly, Yahoo! Pipes, and Mash Maker. It also makes it possible to use products like CherryPy and Django.
