Helium (under Freelance Writers) is DAMN hard to get any money from. I've written a number of top rated articles and have received a whopping $0.00 for my time.

Associated Content, on the other hand, has paid me for everything I've written for them. It's the much better site to write for (and they just got $10MUSD in Series B funding! More money!)

For technical freelancers, instead of the bidding sites, look at directories that are organized by your specialty AND location. One of these is www.freelancelocaltech.com, which just started this year, but is growing rapidly and covers the USA, Canada, Australia and UK will be added at the end of November with more countries to follow in 2008.

My boss is a freelance photographer. I am not sure that he can use this or not but I think I will send him the list just in case. He might find a tool that he never knew he needed.

Thanks from me and him for the list.

Why are stock sites recommended for photographers?

For illustrators, at least, they're seen as anathema, as Brad Holland explains in detail.

Basically they can exist at the expense of the ones who really did the work, at the same time that they lower the prices of these very works (as they make money from thousands of images produced by a multitude of artists, at virtually no cost), making the old work gathered by stock "agencies" compete unfairly for new job opportunities against the authors. I highly recommend to search for Brad Holland's texts. Here's a link to a few of them.

There's even a case of some photographer, I think, who is or was striving trying hard to have the copyrights of his artwork back from Corbys, unsuccessfully, so I think it has no reason to be much different with photographers.

I think that to have art sold as stock by third party with low prices is digging not only one owns grave, but a huge collective grave for the bulk of people who work in that area. Eventually only a few superstars will survive, and even so, earning less.
